The Johnstown flood of 1889, the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, the pan-European bubonic plague epidemic of 1347-51--all of these events left deep impressions on contemporary history and are remembered even today. We have yet to gauge the effects of more modern disasters--for instance, the Kobe earthquake of 1995, which killed 5,000 Japanese--but we recognize their significance. Many scientists are now engaged in developing means to forecast natural disasters more accurately and to put in place more effective safety measures. Ernest Zebrowski tracks their work through history, noting that even the most current of ideas about, say, the dangers of wind shear will almost certainly be proven obsolete in the years to come. Students of technological history, geology, and climatology will find his work stimulating, and general readers will find it highly accessible.

Natural catastrophes seem so capricious as to be unpredictable and unavoidable, but complacency usually combines with ignorance to raise the death toll whenever a tsunami or storm strikes. These human factors underlie Zebrowski's highly informative introduction to the geological, atmospheric, and astronomical sources of disasters. Writing a more interesting tale than a mere catalog of destruction would be, Zebrowski examines dozens of the best-known and lesser-known acts of God in terms of what, from science's current level of understanding, occurred to wipe out Lisbon in 1755, for example, or to wash a U.S. Navy ship miles inland in 1868. The culprits, wave energy propagating through rock and water, respectively, lead Zebrowski to describe the behavior of earthquake waves. And since the failure of buildings and dams contributes mightily to disasters, Zebrowski delivers a minilesson in civil engineering, the first defense against floods, quakes, and high winds, the last leading to the author's concise summary of chaotic behavior. Extremely interesting book on science of disasters....

I've long been interested in climate, weather, and geological sciences that have very little to do with the science of the body or biology that I usually teach or that I read for. I didn't get much of this science in school, and I find it fascinating, though of course, it makes me extremely uneasy to read information like this after we have had several very large natural disasters that led to major suffering on the part of human beings partly through our own fault, and partly as a natural condition of being part of an eco-system that is very much impacted by what we humans do.

This book is not just the usual listing of catastrophic happenings, but rather a few major events are listed with significant information about what either led up to the event, or how the event happened, or how and why it impacted civilization. A lot of this stuff was a mix of several different ways of looking at disasters, including epidemiology and population statistics, things that are not usually looked at until way after the event, and even then, are dismissed. But we dismiss this type of study at our own peril. After Katrina, people should understand more that if you put a city near an immense body of water, with no protection for that city, whether natural or otherwise, there will be consequences of that action. Whether that consequence occurs during the lifetime of the people who build that city without thinking on the edge of a precipice, or whether it occurs during their children's lifetime, has little or no bearing on the deliverance of those consequences.

This book is a must read for urban engineers and urban planning. Whether dealing with environmental impact of building unsafely, or the population statistcs of whether an area can adequately support an exponentially growing population without leading to problems such as that seen on Easter Island where a small environment could not support a large population adequately, is up for grabs. I would hope that those who come after us would do better at taking such concerns to heart when planning communities.

Ernest Zebrowski, Jr. is both a teacher and a story-teller in "Perils of a Restless Planet." I picked the book up to review it and found myself reading it from cover to cover all over again.
Stylistically, the author will begin with the story of, say, the San Francisco earthquake (1906). He then compares it to the Messina earthquake (1908), and asks why there were so many more casualties in the Messina quake (only a 33% - 45% survival rate as compared to San Francisco's 99.8% survival rate). This question leads to a discussion of the strengths of materials---how well they perform when deformed by tension, compression, shear, and torsion. In San Francisco, the houses were built of wood, which will bend and twist and allow its occupants time to escape during a quake. The houses in Messina were built of stone. "It is this plastic behavior of wood (versus stone) that explains the dramatic difference in survival rates in the San Francisco and Messina earthquakes of 1906 and 1908."
There's lots of physics (and some biology, archeology, and sociology) in 'Perils' but it is all very clear and palatable. In fact, this book would make a good overview of science for high school students. It's got stories of volcanoes, plagues, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, asteroids, and poisonous lakes to hold the students' interest. The clear physical explanations of, for example, why some boats will float during a tsunami and others will turn turtle, are an excellent foundation for further explorations into the worlds of science. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how we've managed to survive and even thrive on the surface of such a restless planet. It is an excellent summary of the science necessary to understand many of the Earth's natural catastrophes.

awesome history

I got this book because it was written by my college professor and it was our textbook for his coarse. I have kept it because it shows the history of our earth and many of the past natural disasters. It is a great historical book for anyone who loves science , nature, and anything having to do with Earth's natural phenomena. I have actually used it as reference for many disasters i see happening around the world. Knowing more about what happened in a particular region also gives you a sense of awe when you see how these past events have shaped or changed the way people in that region live. Very good book in my opinion.

This volume expands and improves the AAPG 1978 classic, A Color Illustrated Guide to Carbonate Rock Constituents, Textures, Cements, and Porosities (AAPG Memoir 27). Carbonate petrography can be quite complicated. Changing assemblages of organisms through time, coupled with the randomness of thin-section cuts through complex shell forms, add to the difficulty of identifying skeletal grains. Furthermore, because many primary carbonate grains are composed of unstable minerals (especially aragonite and high-Mg calcite), diagenetic alteration commonly is quite extensive in carbonate rocks. The variability of inorganic and biogenic carbonate mineralogy through time, however, complicates prediction of patterns of diagenetic alteration.

This book is designed to help deal with such challenges. It includes a wide variety of examples of commonly encountered skeletal and nonskeletal grains, cements, fabrics, and porosity types. It includes extensive new tables of age distributions, mineralogy, morphologic characteristics, environmental implications and keys to grain identification. It also encompasses a number of noncarbonate grains, that occur as accessory minerals in carbonate rocks or that may provide important biostratigraphic or paleoenvironmental information in carbonate strata. With this guide, students and other workers with little formal petrographic training should be able to examine thin sections or acetate peels under the microscope and interpret the main rock constituents and their depositional and diagenetic history.

Petrography of Carbonate Rocks

Much like the Color Atlas of Rocks and Minerals in Thin Section, this book is visually appealing and informative. Unlike the Atlas, this book is exhaustive. The user will happily find thin section micrographs supplemented with cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscope photos and many line drawings. At 474 pages, this book is a bargain. Petrographers everywhere should rejoice.

This book is a must for anyone studying, planning on writing a thesis, or working on carbonates. One can get this book for less than half the price than it is on here if you are a non-member of the AAPG (costs even less if you are a member).

About the Author
George S. Morrison is Professor of Early Childhood Education in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration, and a Next Generation Course Redesign Faculty Fellow in the College of Education at the University of North Texas. He teaches courses in early childhood education and teacher education to undergraduate and graduate students. Professor Morrison earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Washington and Jefferson College, a Masters in Elementary Education from California State College of Pennsylvania, and an Ed. D. in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from the University of Pittsburgh. He is an experienced public school teacher and principal and has supervised student teachers. In addition to the University of North Texas, Dr, Morrison has been a professor at Edinboro University Pennsylvania and Florida International University.

Dr. Morrison’s accomplishments include a Distinguished Academic Service Award from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Outstanding Service and Teaching Awards from Florida International University, and the College of Education Faculty Excellence Teaching Award from the University of North Texas. A best-selling author, his other textbooks include Early Childhood Education Today, 12th ed. Charlotte Cotton has been at the forefront of the appraisal of contemporary art photography for more than twenty years. She has held curatorial positions at institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Photographers’ Gallery in London, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has been a visiting scholar and critic at Parsons the New School for Design, New York University, and the School of Visual Arts, New York; California College of the Arts, San Francisco; Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles; and Yale University, New Haven. Good survey, but...

This is a very interesting book however, that is not a new book is, which has left me a bit puzzled trying to figure out why it doesn’t do what I thought it would (or should). "Photography Is Magic" is indeed a wide-based survey of work made in the past decade or so, but it is in many ways much more of an edited source or reference book than an original analytical work. Still worthwhile to peruse.

I was definitely looking forward to another great Charlotte Cotton Photography book, but was unfortunately terribly disappointed with this purchase. There is minimal text from Cotton, and while the pages are flooded with some trending Contemporary Photographs and Photographers, the book falls short of a good critique on the current state of photography.

Best chess book ever?

I really can't say enough about this book. It's the most instructive chess book I've ever read, probably the most entertaining book of any kind that I've ever read.

As far as chess instruction, they say chess is 99% tactics, and Alekhine's games are absolutely full of them. Alekhine's spectacular combinations are legendary of course, and pretty much every game in this book has one (120 complete annotated games in total). In many of the games in this book, he could have won the game pretty much any way he wanted, but ended up passing up a routine endgame over some crazy mating attack instead. The games are full of smaller tactics in the opening, middle, and endgames as well -- just because he won the opponents Queen for a Rook and Bishop doesn't mean the game is over, and his opponents frequently tried to swindle the game. Alekhine shows you exactly how he repelled the attacks. The variations he gives in annotations are pretty much perfect for the club player -- enough variations to explain what is going on, but not too much to smother the reader, or leave too little as an exercise. John Nunn is there with his trusty computer to catch any mistakes Alekhine made. You won't play like Alekhine just from reading his games -- he clearly had an amazing natural talent and passion for the game -- but analyzing the games and playing through all the variations will help anyone's game considerably.

Spielmann said that he could see Alekhine's combinations as well as him, but couldn't get his positions. Alekhine was a positional master as well, and in this book you get to see exactly how he sets up his combinations. Basically, it seemed like, if allowed, he would fix the center with a space advantage, and then slowly turn the screws on his opponent, tying him into knots trying to defend all of the threats, while he carefully set up his own pieces for the coup de grace. Otherwise, he might try to distract his opponent into diverting pieces to the queenside while retaining the option of suddenly transferring his own pieces towards a kingside attack, "like a storm from a clear sky" as Kasparov put it.

A typical game starts with starts with some comments on the opening and why he or his opponent may have chosen the variation. Alekhine explains he played the Dutch in one game because he needed a win; in another, his opponent was avoiding a line Alekhine had just scored a brilliancy against, for example. He typically gives a score or fragment of a relevant game that had just recently been played in that line, which may have influenced the current game, or maybe just was another exciting Alekhine miniature. A long stretch of this book is from the 1920's, when the Orthodox Queen's Gambit Declined, and to a lesser extent the Queen's Indian, was all the rage. I don't play these lines with either color, so that could have been distracting. However I actually thought that helped me understand Alekhine's strategy immensely to see him play those positions repeatedly with either color. By the time you reach the Capablanca match (around game 50 out of 120), you'll be an Orthodox QGD expert as well.

In his early games in the books, which were typically blowouts, he's happy to give a few explanations and variations every few moves. As the games become slower and more strategic, the annotations become increasingly more rich and detailed. Sometimes an entire page is devoted to discussing what the plan of Alekhine or his opponent. One thing that became obvious to me in reading these notes was that Alekhine loved this game, and really this book was his life's work. He put a tremendous amount of work and love into it.

For pure chess entertainment goes, it's a toss up for me between Alekhine and Tal. Your mileage will vary depending on your own style of course. And for entertainment in general, some people like their mystery novels and the tickle in their brain they get when finding out the butler did it. For me, I love the tickle I get seeing Alekhine, with all his pieces being attacked, and thinking "Not only do I not see the mate, I'm not even sure how Alekhine can DRAW here!" ... only to find out next page that, yes, all his pieces are attacked, but in fact if his opponent takes any one of them, a forced variation ensues that concluded in all the pieces being exchanged and Alekhine's h-pawn queening ("The point!!").

This book used to sell for hundreds of dollars used. The Kindle edition is atrocious, with at least one error a game ("1. Rf3"), but for the few bucks I paid for it, is still a complete steal.

Can't recommend enough.

Kindle Edition Unreadable Chess Notation - Do Not Waste Your Time!

So disappointed! I am only referring to the Kindle edition. The chess notation is a mess. It's not formatted at all correctly. I can't believe they released this! Terrible, unreadable. Note: I am not referring at all to the content, or Alekhine's beautiful games: only the formatting which makes following the games very difficult. I had to return this book for a full refund.

A superb book on one of the game's greatest players

As always, timely delivery much appreciated, not that I actually read chess books as fast as I can purchase them! This book is possibly the best of the modern books on Alekhine's chess. All games in algebraic notation with some expanded analysis of certain games thanks to the decades of knowledge that have emerged since Alekhine played them. These are the best of the games from the trilogy that comprises his tournament career. John Nunn's efforts on these intrinsically profound games add much to Alekhine's already-depthful analysis.

Great read. It brings together many different ideas that have been discussed before but not in a comprehensive way. Would recommend it to anyone looking for a truly unique perspective regarding history as we know it. After all it proves that History is truly His story... to the victor goes the spoils and the right to write his story as he wants to.

This Book Shatters the Illusion of World History that We Were Taught in School

I first heard about the Swerdlows when a friend recommended the book True Reality of Sexuality. It changed my life and I've been obsessed with everything from the authors that I could get my hands on. Before reading True World History, I knew that American history and Judeo-Christian history especially, were sugar-coated and edited, but I had no idea until I read this. It blew me away and I couldn't put it down. I was hesitant to read it at first because of some reviews but it is absolutely worth it, especially with the great kindle price.

You'll learn about civilizations on Mars and other planets, the war-like civilizations on Mu and Atlantis. Decades ago newspapers, and even documents by the Smithsonian Institute, talked about Egyptian artifacts in North America. The Chinese were on the west coast, and you'll read about the amazing history of Michigan, yup Michigan, and the different cultures that traveled very far for its copper mines. There's plenty on Hitler and his expeditions to Tibet and Antarctica, and of course the horrible genocides that were carried out by the Catholic Church over the centuries. Reviewers said that this book is full of theories. Nope, it gets you to think outside of the box and really ask questions about what you've been taught. And of course the last chapters show you what you can do to improve yourself and the world.

I felt satisfied with the lengths of the different chapters of this book. I don't know why others complained. People get overwhelmed by information that's new and different. Especially if it counters what we have been told by the status quo, the media, the education system, and our government. Read this book now, it's fun and dangerous to the illusion that's been set up around you. With love...

The Underbelly of History.

Stewart Swerdlow's True World History is a captivating, engrossing, but ultimately uneven reading experience. While there is a great deal of intriguing insight into world history, his sketchy scholarship and breezy attitude detract from what might otherwise be an important work. In the area of suppressed archeology, however, Swerdlow really shines - in fact, whenever he knows his business his prose style tightens and your attention is riveted. Too often, however, his cavalier style is simplistic and dismissive. The maps and graphs are noteworthy, but sometimes outweigh the thin text that accompanies them. This is not an encyclopedia, tis true, but the endless snippets require a bit more substance. The aim of this book is to zero in on historical inaccuracies, and this he does with a laser focus - though often at the expense of complexity, where truth is to be found.

I absolutely recommend this book, however, and will read it again. There are many important passages and much I did not know. In today's zombie zeitgeist it is a brave attempt to shake people out of their complacent, cud chewing mediocrity. The world may be screwed, but it's more interesting than we knew - this he informs us with dash and verve. Lots of astonishing material here, good potential for a mature second edition.
