This is his last book with new poems. He is regarded as one of America's greatest poets. Among his many honors are four Pulitzer Prizes and an appointment as Consultant in Poetry at the Library of Congress.

At John F. Kennedy's inauguration on Jan. 20, 1961, he was called the Poet Laurete of U. S. A. to be acknowledged by such an educated president to take part. He was such an old man, he fumbled his papers, as he read "The Gift Outright." This was the first time when a poet had been so honored and marked a high point in his long and distinguished career.

When the English poet W. H. Auden wrote an essay in praise of Robert Frost, he made the observation that he was literally in a class by himself: "the class of nature poets who have worked with the land and actually know how to milk cows and, in general, can life the life of a Yankee farmer. In his elder years, in Florida, he planted orange groves and other fruits.

He was more than a poet and man of letters. He was a public figure and had by the time of his death in 1963 become a nation's symbol. His most famous poems are "Stopping by Wood on a Snowy Evening" and "Mending Wall." In his book, NORTH OF BOSTON, you will find a long poem/fable called "The Generations of Man."

Since I am a bird fancier, I chose "Looking For a Sunset Bird in Winter" (as I look for birds year round in this town which hates starlings and pigeons.

The west was getting out of gold,
The breath of air had died of cold,

In summer when I passed the place,
I had to stop and lift my face;
A bird with an angelic gift
Was singing in it sweet and swift.

No bird is singing in it now.
As gilt to gold that wouldn't show,
A brush had left a crooked stroke
Of what was either cloud or smoke --
From north to south across the blue.
A fpercing little star was (shining) thru.

NORTH OF BOSTON was written along with all sorts of briefer things in rhyme in a form suggested by the eclogues of Virgil. He'd tried for years to get his poems published in 'Atlantic Monthly who automatically rejected each and every thing he submitted. I used to love poetry but could not write it; Tristan, on the other hand, was such a writer, though his dad Zach was more into prose like his old mom, except for the science fiction and sports. Will idealistic minister's daughter Sarah and millionaire ladies' man Jordan be able to overcome their misunderstandings and find love?

From their very first meeting, Sarah Watson and Jordan Stamford's relationship is fiery. Sarah is convinced Jordan is going to destroy the small town she calls home. And she is fighting off her fierce attraction to him as well. Until Sarah, Jordan has been able to keep his heart free from any emotional entanglements. He is steadfast in his decision to never marry or have children, but he is finding it difficult to keep his heart out of his relationship with Sarah. The couple find many obstacles in their path as they struggle to find their happily ever after.

Reluctant Father by Margaret Tanner is a well-written, fast-paced novel. Ms. Tanner also packs plenty of conflict into Jordan and Sarah's love story. Sarah is twenty years old to Jordan's thirty. Sarah's immaturity contributes to some of the problems that arise between them. The next major area of contention between them is their income disparity. Sarah is barely making ends meet while Jordan's attitude is that he has enough money to purchase anything he desires, including Sarah. Both characters have a proclivity to jump to conclusions and a disinterest in hearing each other out. Both Jordan and Sarah's emotions wildly fluctuate from one extreme to the other but rarely settle in the middle. When cooler heads prevail, they are usually able to work together through their problems.

Reluctant Father is a highly passionate love story, and Ms. Tanner captivates the reader with wildly romantic dates and glamorous parties against the backdrop of the turbulent sixties.

Another winner by Margaret Tanner.

This author is quickly rising to the top of my favorites list, and my latest read, Reluctant Father, has certainly cemented that spot even more.
Set in the unusual 1960s (the only books I've read from this time period were written then... found in second hand shops), it was a refreshing change of pace for historical romance readers.
In a nutshell, fiery Sarah and equally hot-tempered Jordan find they would rather kiss than clash. However, there is one serious impediment to their happily-ever-after. Scarred by a terrible childhood, Jordan is unwilling to give Sarah the baby she craves.
I really loved this book. It was hot and sexy without being crass. Jordan was a wonderful tortured hero, and spunky Sarah kept me cheering the whole time.
Very nicely done, Ms. Tanner. Looking forward to the next one.

When you open a Margaret Tanner book, you feel as if you step from its pages into Australia. The Sixties setting gave extra flavor to this saucy story, already lush with vivid descriptions of Australian city and shore. Margaret's skill as an author shines through yet again in this tale of sweet, independent-minded Sarah and Jordan, a man of power who knows what he wants. When he decides he wants Sarah, he doesn't know how much she loves children, and wants a family of her own. His abused childhood made him vow not to have kids. Having lost his mom as a toddler, he's never felt the love of family, so has never trusted himself enough to commit to one woman. Will Sarah be able to change his mind? Exactly what I needed and met my expectations

This book is required for my Certifed Lactation Counselors training. I ordered it early to ensure I could thoroughly review and read it before my class started. The information included is exactly what I need to stick in my work bag and flip through as needed. The information is easy to access and concise. This is not a clinical book, which I appreciate as I do not want to approach laction management as pathological perspective.
I will be keeping this book on my person for further reference and assimilation of counseling techniques.

Good book!

I needed this for my CLC class and didn't buy the printed version in time from the school. Turns out to work out for the best as the books were lost in transit with the schools shipper and I was one of the only ones in class with a book. Only thing is the page #'s don't line up with the book so in our lecture when it'd be noted to find something on such and such page in our book it was never right.

It really flows well as a "guide," with tabs printed within the page edges so you can get right to what you are seeking. Good illustrations and great appendices. Finding the Deeper Meaning of the Theory of Constraints

In The Choice, Eli Goldratt exposes the deep, underlying principles of life embodied in TOC. People are Good. People Think. Emotion is Logical. All Conflicts can be Eliminated. There are always Win-Win Solutions. Systems are Simple. Systems can be Improved Infinitely. Taken together, everyone should succeed. Then, why not? Dr. Goldratt teaches us in a very carefully written way how to find the errors we make and how to correct them. I urge you to read The Choice through quickly, and then read it again slowly, thoughtfully several times. The material talks much of distribution, but it is about living your life. To have a meaningful life is up to you; you make The Choice.

Relevant, interesting and meaningful.

By reading The Goal (Goldratt's most famous book), a number of years back, at the insistance of a very wise owl, and with reluctance, since I tend to despise typical MBA's readings, I was able to increase productivity by over 20% without investing a dime and turn one of my companies around in less than a week. So I was eager and excited to read Goldratt's The Choice. Though less earth-shattering (and less counter-intuitive) than The Goal, it is none-the-less a very interesting, meaningful and relevant book about not only how to solve business problems, but also how to think clearly and improve any area of life.
The style of the book is rather self-conscious and at times unnervingly patronizing. The main deffect of The Goal (the friction generated by the style, at the same time childish and patronizing) is exacerbated in this book, told in the voice of Goldratt's daughter. It is unnerving, because the energy spent trying to make the narrative believable, takes away from the smooth flow of the important ideas. It is also strange to have the narrator (the daughter) tell us in syrupy ways what a genius her father is, when we know the author is the father! (an excessively contrived, yet inneffective device). I also found fault with the chapter on tautologies and circular logic. Tautologies are not what Goldratt thinks they are, strictly speaking. And, hoping not to sound too petty, the use of "then" instead of "than" (more then -err, than- once) was my minor editorial pet peeve.
The truly enjoyable parts of the book are "the reports" that the father sends the daughter. Even if they are just stylizations of real-life situations, they are very illustrative of what is possible with a little clear thinking. After reading the book, I am eager to generate "quantum change", and take my companies to net profits equal to my current revenues.
It must be said that despite being a self proclaimed "true scientist", Goldratt's approach is "integral" (or "holistic" -at the risk of scaring you with New-Agy terminology-) in the sense that it is not a valueless, flat, reductionist approach to life, but quite the contrary, an embrace of the interrelation of Emotions, Intuition and Logic, and how it relates to "living a full life". It spouses a synergistic (again, apologies for the term) approach to conflict and contradictions and an integral notion of knowledge and knowing.
5 stars for content, 2 stars for style, equals 4 stars total (since I give more weight to the first).

Solid and highly recommended reading

A man of many talents, including both science and business, Eliyahu Goldratt goes philosophical in "The Choice". Aiming to make his readers think, he questions the decisions we as people make during day to day life. Decisions are decisions even when they are not obviously so, from religious belief to deciding one knows of something when they don't have the whole story. A must for anyone who likes to think and have their minds and world views challenged, "The Choice" is solid and highly recommended reading.

I love the activities in this book to help me incorporate science into my daily morning meetings. I have the other books for Math and ELA in morning meetings and find them all extremely helpful. As with all Responsive Classroom books, they are super easy reads and the activities are easily implemented! This is a must have for all educators who do Morning Meetings!

Book for school to purchase

I thought overall this book was great but didn't realize it was set for K-6. I teach only first so I ended up tearing the book apart and sharing with other teachers in my school. Since I was only interested in first grade section, I was sort of disappointed. Perhaps this would be a book for a school to purchase for the school library and all teachers to utilize.

Jeffrey Bennett is an astrophysicist, author, and educator. Jeffrey Bennett is an astrophysicist, author, and educator. Jeffrey Bennett received a B.A. in biophysics from the University of California, San Diego (1981) and a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, Boulder (1987). He currently spends most of his time as a teacher, speaker, and writer. He has taught extensively at all levels, including having founded and run a science summer school for elementary and middle school children. At the college level, he has taught more than fifty classes in subjects ranging from astronomy, physics, and mathematics, to education. He served two years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he helped create numerous programs for science education. He also proposed the idea for and helped develop the Voyage Scale Model Solar System, which opened in 2001 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. In addition to "The Cosmic Perspective," he has written college-level textbooks in astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics, and a book for the general public, "On the Cosmic Horizon" (Addison-Wesley, 2001). He also recently completed his first children's book, "Max Goes to the Moon" (Big Kid Science, 2003). When not working, he enjoys participating in masters swimming and in the daily adventures of life with his wife, Lisa, his children Grant and Brooke, and his dog, Max. Megan Donahue is an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Michigan State University. Her current research is mainly on clusters of galaxies: their contents--dark matter, hot gas, galaxies, active galactic nuclei--and what they reveal about the contents of the universe and how galaxies form and evolve. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and received a bachelor's degree in physics from MIT, whereshe began her research career as an X-ray astronomer. She has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado, for a thesis on theory and optical observations of intergalactic and intracluster gas. That thesis won the 1993 Trumpler Award from the Astronomical Society for the Pacific for an outstanding astrophysics doctoral dissertation in North America. She continued post-doctoral research in optical and X-ray observations as a Carnegie Fellow at Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, and later as an STScl Institute Fellow at Space Telescope. Megan was a staff astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, when she joined the MSU faculty. Megan is married to Mark Voit, who is also a frequent collaborator of hers on many projects, including "The Cosmic Perspective" and the raising of their three children, Michaela, Sebastian, and Angela. Between the births of Sebastian and Angela, Megan qualified for and ran the 2000 Boston Marathon. She hopes to run another one soon.

Nicholas M. Schneider is an associate professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado and a researcher in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. He received his B.A. in physics and astronomy from Dartmouth College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona in 1988. In 1991, he received the National Science Foundation's Presidential Young Investigator Award. His research interests include planetary atmospheres and planetary astronomy, with a focus on the odd case of Jupiter's moon Io. He enjoys teaching at all levels and is active in efforts to improve undergraduate astronomy education. Off the job, he enjoysexploring the outdoors with his family and figuring out how things work.

Mark Voit is an associate professor in the department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. He earned his A.B. in astrophysical sciences at Princeton University and his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado in 1990. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a research fellow in theoretical astrophysics, then moved on to Johns Hopkins University as a Hubble Fellow. Before coming to Michigan State, Mark worked in the Office of Public Outreach at the Space Telescope, where he developed museum exhibitions about the Hubble Space Telescope and was the scientist behind NASA's HubbleSite. His research interests range from interstellar processes in our own galaxy to the clustering of galaxies in the early universe. He is married to co-author Megan Donahue, and they try to play outdoors with their three children whenever possible, enjoying hiking, camping, running, and orienteering. Mark is also author of the popular book "Hubble Space Telescope: New Views of the Universe,"

Voit is an astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute.
