About the Author
Dr. Gary A. Porter earned M.B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Dr. Porter taught at several universities, including San Diego State; Loyola University Chicago; and the University of Montana; and has served as a department chair. He is currently Distinguished Lecturer at Drake University. Widely published and the recipient of numerous teaching awards, Dr. Porter has conducted workshops on introductory accounting education and corporate financial reporting, has worked as a staff accountant with Deloitte & Touche, and has actively served the Illinois CPA Society, American Accounting Association, and Financial Executives International.

Dr. Curtis L. Norton received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University and an M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota. He is currently Clinical Professor of Accounting at Arizona State University. As Professor of Accounting at Northern Illinois University for more than 30 years, Dr. Norton earned the University Excellence Teaching Award and has published in THE ACCOUNTING REVIEW, THE JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTING EDUCATION, CPA JOURNAL, as well as other journals. A member of the American Accounting Association and Financial Executives International, he also consults and conducts training for private and governmental authorities, banks, and utilities.

Pretty good textbook as far as textbooks go

Pretty good textbook as far as textbooks go. I wish there were solutions included in the textbook, perhaps for the odds or evens? I would have appreciated a solutions manual or something. Pages rip or mark easily. The worked examples are nice but only of medium help trying to solve the problems.

THE. WORST. TEXTBOOK. EVER.

The pages are thin and easily tear off the binder because the book is so thick. In addition the explanations in the text are vague, convoluted and complicated. The exercises in Cengage are ridiculously time consuming and make leaps and assumptions that the student can bridge a gap.

Example: under capital expenditure the words overhaul are used three times as applying to a capital expenditure. But when used in the exercise on Cengage, then it is not. I am an adult student, working in the nuclear industry and returning to school. I manage contracts and we deal with capital expenditure all the time. The book was nothing like reality.

Example:
I am on exercise 9, part 3 on Cengage. I get to where it tells me to compute the working capital. I go to the book and under "Working capital" in th index it is ONLY s"supposedly" covered in pages 678-679. That's chapter 13, not chapter 9. But then I go to those pages to see an illustrated computation of how to get the working capital- and NOWHERE on those two pages are the words Working and Capital used. Nor is the example related to it. If it is in any way, it is too obscure for someone who up to know has had a 4.0 GPA to even begin to understand.

This is the worst text book I've ever worked with. I've never hated a class as much as this; and the main reason: is because I HAVE LEARNED NOTHING!!

Great introductory overview of how the Christian churches developed

I found this book to be a really great introduction to the history of Christianity since the early church days post-crucifixion. For someone entirely unfamiliar with Christianity's roots in Judaism since creation, this book will not fill that gap, but it doesn't claim to. It's just an important note for those who may not realize that Christianity is the continuation of a faith in God that started long before Christ. Cairns does a good job presenting all the primary influences on the development of the formal church organization(s) as well as the informal spiritual perspectives. All viewpoints and interpretations seemed to be handled objectively (i.e. Roman Catholic vs. Reformation) "most" of the time. It's very informative for those who question why there are so many different denominations of Christianity.
The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five deals with the chronology. Although the book generally moves steadily through the centuries, chapter by chapter, I found the breakdown within the chapters to be more topical than chronological. My personal preference while learning history is to move year by year, aware of all the things happening concurrently with each other. Cairns deals more topically, whether about events or historical person, so I felt like we were jumping around in time a lot making it difficult for me to keep all events in sequence. Admittedly, this is a personal problem, but it was frustrating enough for me to subtract one star. Hope this helps.

Exactly what you would expect from "The Professor"

While many books on the clarinet are out on the market, it is a rare opportunity to experience one from a clarinetist with the fame, renown and talent of Benny Goodman. This short method book presents brief articles discussing basic techniques, methodology and even a little clarinet history. Mr. Goodman's knowledge and encouragement to the student are presented in a straightforward, no-nonsense style. The method book presents listings of all of the major and minor scales as well as over three dozen separate exercises working with timing, intervals, syncopation and more advanced chromatic work. The book also includes several of Mr. Goodman's solo works, including the accompaniments for the other instruments in the piece.

While the books is excellent in all respects, there are a couple of minor flaws. The first flaw is the lack of a fingering chart normally seen in most method books. This would indicate that Mr. Goodman and the subsequent editors felt the method was geared more towards intermediate and advanced students. This also leads to the second flaw, which is the focus on the more experienced student. The presentation of the material assumes the reader is familiar with the basics of music and is familiar with all of the basic fingerings of the clarinet's three major registers. The altissimo register and the upper clarion register are heavily emphasized and beginning students having issues with these registers would have difficulties without further technique development.

These very minor flaws do not detract from the fact that this small volume is a great method book for intermediate and advanced students and offers a rare insight into one of the greatest clarinet players of the 20th Century. Any serious clarinetist should pick up this book as they will be richly rewarded.

Very Good for Intemdiate Players

This is very good for intemediate players. Since I am relearning the clarinet after 52 years of not playing, I have found this very helpful as it keeps me reminded of the basics that I may be tempted to forget after such long time away from the clarinet. I do agree with the individual who wrote that it is not for the beginner. I hope this helpful to all who read it.

Keep it simple!

I am fairly new to Forex, but have seen so much hyperbole it is ridiculous.I like this little book, because it is straightforward and simple. I have found simple to usually be better. It is lacking some info, such as exactly when to enter some trades. I plan on testing that out myself anyway. When I am done checking out whether the methods shown have any merit I will report back.
