About the Author
James Brophy is the Francis H. Squire Professor of History specializing in modern European history at the University of Delaware. He received his B.A. from Vassar College and did his graduate training at the Universität Tubingen and Indiana University, where he specialized in the social and political history of nineteenth-century Europe. He is the author of Capitalism, Politics, and Railroads in Prussia, 1830–1870 and Popular Culture and the Public Sphere in the Rhineland, 1800-1850.

Joshua Cole is Professor of History at the University of Michigan. Specializing in the social and cultural history of France since the Revolution of 1789, he earned his Ph.D. at University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of The Power of Large Numbers: Population, Politics, and Gender in Nineteenth-Century France (2000).

John Robertson received both his M.A. and his Ph.D. in ancient history from the University of Pennsylvania. A specialist in the social and economic history of the Ancient Near East, Professor Robertson has published several articles in major scholarly journals and contributed articles to such major reference works as the recently published Encyclopedia of Ancient History (2012) and Cursed Cradle: A Short History of Mesopotamia/Iraq (2013).

Thomas Max Safley is Professor of History at the University of Pennsylvania. A specialist in the economic and social history of early modern Europe, his particular research interests include the history of the Reformation, the family, charity, work, and business. In addition to numerous articles and reviews, Professor Safley is the author of Let No Man Put Asunder: The Control of Marriage in the German Southwest, 1550–1620 and Charity and Economy in the Orphanages of early modern Augsburg.

Carol Symes is an Associate Professor of history and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the history department at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, where she has won the top teaching award in the College of Liberal Arts and Science. Her main areas of study include medieval Europe, especially France and England; cultural history; history of information media and communication technologies; history of theatre. Her first book was A Common Stage: Theater and Public Life in Medieval Arras (2007).

Null, a well-known spokesperson for natural health and aging (Gary Null's Ultimate Anti-Aging Program), offers another volume on how to deal with the physical effects of aging. According to the author's research, illnesses such as cancer, heart disease and degenerative brain conditions are, in part, caused by damage inflicted by free radicals-unstable molecules that impair cells. The bodies' defenses against free radicals are antioxidants that can neutralize the free radicals' effect. In order to lessen the number of free radicals, Null believes it is necessary to drink pure water, exercise properly, follow a power aging diet and consume a variety of antioxidant vitamins, herbs and minerals that should boost the immune system. Null's exhortations to detoxify the body will sound familiar to devotees, but others may find his program overly stringent and too detailed. The cardiovascular protocol, for example, is quite complex. His diet program (he calls it the non-diet diet) is similar to what he has been recommending for years: strictly avoid red meat, caffeine, sugar, dairy, alcoholic beverages and wheat products. The mainly vegetarian meals (menus are included) that he advocates should be composed of organic products.

This book is pretty good if you haven't read any other books by Null. If you have, I would forget about it. Mainly because he doesn't really bring anything new to the table. The only difference between Power Aging and his previous books are in the way the information is arranged. Other than that, it is basically recycled material. Good for a new reader but almost a waste of time for people who have read something published by Null in the past.

I haven't been impressed with Gary's books as of late. I completely agree with a couple of the reviewers who claim Gary's books are just recycled material, over and over again. I couldn't agree more.... until this book.

I have to say, I got A LOT out of this book, that I hadn't in some of his other books. There are plenty of new ideas presented in this book, and I also like the format of this book. His writing style is much more fluent in this book than in books of the past. Also, his message is as clear as ever. In addition, this is one of the first books that I've read of Gary's, where he recommends eating fish. I believe in early 2000 or so, is when he started promoting fish, after 20+ years of promoting a vegan diet. But I hadn't seen it in print until this book.

All in all, I think this is Gary's best book yet. I'm still kind of surprised with some of the reviews on here. Maybe they didn't actually read the book; it was more of a skim through.

Nothing New

Unlike books by some anti-aging practitioners who seem to publish in order to advertise their HRT programs, Gary Null's agenda is not so obvious. He claims that his book is different from the rest, but that's only because he has included a bit more information on environmental factors and their effects on aging at the beginning. Hence, he recommendations safe and organic food sources.

Apart from that, I see nothing new. The same old glossary of supplements, the same old recipes that no one has time to prepare and recommendations on exercise which only show that the author is far from an expert in this area.

However, I'm surprised that the author actually gave "natural" alternatives to hormone replacement. I'm not sure if the supplements really work, but at least he's not pushing HRT and making light of potential side effects even in expert hands.

Not a fantastic book but still quite informative for those who haven't already read a hundred books on anti-aging.

Someone had to write the history of this subject--a problem that has plagued me ever since the days of my childhood, which were mostly very lonely ones--lonely days caused by my persistent body odor. I least I THINK that was why none of the children in my school would talk to me . . .

Viva La France!

Herein, the steward of the eponymous Inaba Clinic in Tokyo, Japan holds forth on a sensitive topic with authority and dignity. Inaba is known primarily for 1996's seminal "Androgenetic Alopecia: Modern Concepts of Pathogenesis," but truer disciples consider this to be his finest work (although a 1987 article from the Yonsei Medical Journal entitled "Lipid Composition of Ear Wax in Hircismus" has its partisans). Etiology and treatment are given roughly equal coverage in this admirably thorough volume. A convenient guide to trauma centers equipped to deal with acute cases is also included. Intriguingly, this book reveals that the clich�d sneer about the French being particularly afflicted has been borne out by decades of carefully documented research. I can attest to this personally, as Mrs. Higgensworth's longtime beau prior to her becoming my betrothed hailed from that malodorous land, and the few times that I met him I almost fainted from his "eau de lui-m�me."

Drawing on the recollections of Wari' elders who participated in consuming the dead, this book presents one of the richest, most authoritative ethnographic accounts of funerary cannibalism ever recorded. Beth Conklin explores Wari' conceptions of person, body, and spirit, as well as indigenous understandings of memory and emotion, to explain why the Wari' felt that corpses must be destroyed and why they preferred cannibalism over cremation. Her findings challenge many commonly held beliefs about cannibalism and show why, in Wari' terms, it was considered the most honorable and compassionate way of treating the dead.

a superb discussion of a difficult topic

This is an excellent book which thoroughly and sensitively covers a topic that is difficult for someone raised in U.S. culture to talk about. I am an anthropologist so I have the edge in terms of cultural relativism, but I think that anyone interested in the reality of this topic (rather than the sensationalist approach) would find this book compelling. I highly recommend it for personal or course use.

A GREAT BOOK FOR RESEARCH OR LEISURE

I looked into this book a source for a term paper I was writing on Ritual Cannibalism, but then chose to buy if as my summer reading material. The book is very well written and easy to understand, which make it ideal for professionals, students, and lay-people alike. Coklin does a great job letting the reader into the mind of Wari' peoples; the testemonials are engaging and thought-provoking. I must warn that if you are looking for material that is critical of cannibalism, or argues that it does not exist, this isn't it. "Consuming Grief" makes cannibalism seem rational, and makes you feel sad that these peoples customs and culture were forced away. Coklin is biased in the sense that she is an anthropologist, in that I mean she does not pass any judgement on the peoples she is studying.

Excellent Ethnography on Cannibalism

I'm a 20-year-old anthropology major and in my college Medicine and Culture class I was given an assignment in which I could choose any ethnography and write a critique of the book/author. My teacher provided us with examples of books we could read and this was one of them. I have always thought cannibalism was an interesting subject so I chose this book to critique. I find it to be excellently written and accessible to a lot of readers who are interested in cannibalism, not just anthropologists. The following is the introduction of my paper that I wrote to critique the book:

Cannibalism has often been a taboo subject in Western culture. In Consuming Grief: Compassionate Cannibalism in an Amazonian Society, Beth A. Conklin brings cannibalism into a whole new light. Conklin explains the funerary cannibalistic practices of the Wari' and gives underlying causes as to why they participated in this. The Wari' are native South American Indians who live in western Brazil and eastern Bolivia in the Amazon rainforest. She argues that the reason the Wari' practice funerary (also known as mortuary or endo-) cannibalism is that they are trying to eradicate physical reminders of the person who died so the family members of the deceased can move on with their lives and not live in constant grief. Conklin successfully conveys her argument through the use of emic explanations, simple language, images and maps, and a very flowing structure (not only the structure of the book itself, but also the way that she presents arguments). Although the argument is successful, there are a few areas in which Conklin could have improved her ethnography: when using etic perspectives, she often used ideas from other researchers instead of formulating her own and she was repetitive in her use of language.
