Fred R. McKenzie (MSW, George Williams College, PhD, Loyola University) is associate professor, former director of the school of social work and presently dean of the College of Professional Studies at Aurora University. He has been a full-time faculty member since 1991. Prior to that, Professor McKenzie served as associate director for clinical services at SPECTRUM Youth and Family Services and executive director of Barrington Youth Services, and has been in private practice in Illinois for nearly thirty years.

good solid focus

this new book is a nice addition to the works available when working with new therapists and attempting to teach them about the importance of relationships. The author does a nice job of interweaving clinic vignettes into his theoretical base. The theories are described in enough depth for a novice to see the importance of each of them in the context of therapeutic work. I plan to use this book as part of our residents introduction to working with chronic patients and their needs

Interesting enough

I was shocked when I received this book from Amazon because it was such a small book for such a large price. It is an easy read within a few hours, even for a slow reader like me. Being a poor student, if I had it to do again, I would have just borrowed it from the library. I did not find anything in this book that isn't already in any generalist book (or any other social work book for that matter).

Peter Feldmeier, PhD, a professor at the University of Toledo, holds the Murray/Bacik endowed chair of Catholic Studies, where he specializes in Christian Spirituality, Comparative Theology, and Buddhism. Named the 2010 Aquinas Scholars Professor of the Year, Feldmeier is author of numerous publications including The Path of Wisdom: A Christian Commentary on the Dhammapada and The Developing Christian: Spiritual Growth through the Life Cycle.

This book is one of the two textbooks for the Christian Education
class on Faith Development at Pfeiffer University that I am taking now.The author has written for everyone in a clear and easy method to understand. This is a text book that I do not mind reading. Later this will be a good reference book for my future. It is certainly a good book for all students working toward a degree in Religion.

Generally a Useful Text

Throughout the text, Feldmeier strings together Piaget, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Ericsson, and John of the Cross, among others, walking through the human age groups from birth to death. Feldmeier's biases as a male academic who has not himself raised children are apparent in some discussions. But if the text is read understanding the limitations of the background of the author, it is useful. Particular strengths are the chapters on midlife and beyond.

Sen-Senkov's poetry comes across easily and well in translation. Some of his imaginative leaps are more obscure than others, but this only increases the pleasure gained from following them. As a poet he is anti-hermetic—he writes to be understood, and he is generous in sharing his observations. Translators and English-language readers alike can delight in the fact that the intuitive logic of his imagination essentially transcends linguistic boundaries.

About the Author
Andrei Sen-Senkov: He is the author of five books of poetry, prose and "visual poems". He is a regular participant in Moscow literary festivals, performing free verse and short prose. In 1998 he was an award-winner at the Turgenev Festival for Short Prose, and in 2006, 2008 was shortlisted for the Andrei Bely Award.
Peter Golub: Peter Golub is a Moscow-born poet and translator. He has published original work and translations in various journals, including ARC Poetry, Cimarron, and World Literature Today. In 2008 he edited an anthology of contemporary Russian poetry, which was published by Jacket magazine. In 2007 a bilingual edition of his poems, My Imagined Funeral, was published by Argo-Risk Press in Moscow. He is currently a translation consultant for the St. Petersburg Review, and is pursuing his PhD at Columbia University. He is the recipient of a PEN Translation Grant for a collection of flash fiction by Linor Goralik and a BILTC Fellowship for the poems of Andrei Sen-Senkov.

I would above all point the quality and original expression of a world view through a poetic and aforistic language so uncommon to what we are all dealing with in our rather modish recent poetic production.
Another horizon shines in the poetry of Andrei Sen- Senkov, there is a feeling of urgency, the sense that other memories and cultures are in danger...his book gives a view and a sense of what is happening every day...in his very special style and tone.
You can find a longer review of this book on my blog Yvette Centeno Literatura e Arte, where I also take notice of the cover, due to a Young Artist, Sveta Dorosheva, who already has an extraordinary portfolio of illustrations and artistbooks, revealing ancient and magical influences of past cultures and civilizations, she found in medieval codices, cards, arabic or persians tales...
Andrei was responsive to such an inspiration, being born himself in the distant Tajikistan and living now in a problematic Moscow, where he is already shining in cultural and literary circles.
I'll follow his work, hoping he will be translated with the higher quality he deserves.

From Chapter One, What Law is About

You have come to this school to embark upon the study of the law. Most of you have in the back of your heads an idea that as a result of that study you will become lawyers. Some of you have some notion of what it is that a lawyer does. You think of a man who tries cases before the courts. Or do you think particularly of a man to whom to turn in case, for any reason, you happen to get arrested? But what a court does, what a lawyer does in court, and what he does outside, what relationship either court or lawyer has to the law, what relation the law school has to any of these things -- around these things, I take it, there floats a pleasant haze. If it were not pleasant, you would not be here. Perhaps you would not, if there were no haze.

What I propose to do is to take up successively a series of questions. First, and today, what is this law about, which you propose to study? Second, and tomorrow, what is the machinery for going about this study; what are you going to have to do in this school and how can you best go about doing it? Third, what are the opportunities that the school offers and what are some of the ways of their solution? And lastly, how does the study of the law here bear upon the work that you will do and the life that you will live when you leave this school and go into practice?

A CLASSIC
By Student Starting Law School Next Fall
Written over 70 years ago, Bramble Bush is still THE book recommended for students to read just prior to beginning classes or early in their first semester of law school. Be prepared to read passages over again due to the author's 1920's style of sentence composition, but also be prepared for an enjoyable 200 pages of insight into the U.S. system of common law, case /precedence law, and most importantly, advice and guidance for 1L, 2L, and 3L (law) students.

The fun is in seeing what's dated

Professor Llewellyn's distinguished collection of lectures is best used nowadays, in my opinion, as a baseline to see what has changed in the legal profession and what has not. Llewellyn's discussion of the case system is a terrific look at the judge's toolbox, but law students today cannot rely on a deep understanding of the case system to become good lawyers -- the proliferation of other forms of law, particularly statutory and administrative law, is too great. On the other hand, Llewellyn's extreme statement of the legal realist position -- still only one competing theory of law when he gave his lectures -- is now the undisputed champion of the legal discipline, and it's fascinating to travel back to a time when the author felt the need to be an apologist for it. The chapters that stand up best, in my opinion, are the ones discussing the dilemma of siding with the powerful after graduation; this is a topic that only becomes more timely as expenses rise and the pressure to join Big Law grows for new law graduates. I would especially recommend this book for casual students of legal history or jurisprudence.

Standing the test of time.....

I actually felt myself getting smarter while reading this book. Outside of just covering "technicalities" of studying law, he also offers a fascinating perspective on the study and practice of law in relation to the lawyer's life (money/finc. security as primary motive for entering legal profession.) Also interesting are his views on making/missing law review and the effect this has on 2Ls. Overall, an excellent read, time well spent, and very deserving of the word "classic."

Bill Zender has an MBA and more than 30 years experience in the gaming industry. He’s widely recognized within the industry as a leading authority on all aspects of casino management and game protection and is much sought after as a gaming operations consultant and lecturer. Bill is a former part owner, vice president, and Director of Casino Operations at the Aladdin Hotel-Casino in Las Vegas, and has written a number of books on game protection and advantage play, including the first book on card counting written specifically for the casino industry.

In addition to these accomplishments, Bill spent two years as a member of the Nevada Gaming Control Board as an agent with the Division of Enforcement; owner and instructor at PCI Dealing School; Asian games manager at the Desert Inn in Las Vegas; and the interim General Manager at the Casino San Pablo, a card room and casino in California. He also spent some time on the other side of the gaming table as a professional card counter and advantage player. Presently, he’s the owner and primary consultant for Last Resort Consulting.

David Harris is Associate Dean of the Western Clinical School of the University of Sydney, at Westmead Hospital.
