An essential introduction to Chinese cooking

This is a wonderful introduction to Chinese cooking.
Besides the recipes, Madam Chu explains the ingredients, utensils, and preparation (cutting) techniques. The Chinese are masters at cutting the ingredients into small pieces for rapid cooking - hence the evolution of the Wok and Chinese cleaver (slicing knife).
The recipes are mostly Cantonese, but there are also some Mandarin ones as well.
I personally took Chinese cooking lessons from Madam Chu (in her New York apartment) over fifty years ago!
Unlike many cookbooks, every recipe was fully tested prior to inclusion.

Oldie but Goodie!

My paperback 1969 edition of this book is falling apart after 45 years of use! Not only are there the standbys of the best fried rice with ham and eggs, egg fu yung, chicken with nuts in hoisin sauce, but it also includes ones I still have not tried such as sharks fins with Chinese cabbage,sesame seed ping, and tea steeped eggs. Menus are included, along with drawings of methods of cutting, ingredients, and how to use chopsticks. A lot is packed into this little book; it is good for the beginner and the person advancing into less known dishes.

A required reading I actually loved

This book was a required text for a media studies class I took as part of my major, but I honestly really liked the book and was happy to read it. Miller explains things very clearly in my opinion, and gives good examples to demonstrate his points or arguments. If you're interested in how culture has changed in the digital age, both economically and socially, this is an interesting read.

I purchased this book for class, and its ok so far. I'm glad that there are some PDF's available. Author miller cites from several sources inside his book as if it reads like a graduate thesis or something.

How the internet and society are changing each other

If you are looking for a scholarly book about how people have been using the internet and social networking sites over the past 20 years, this book is ideal. Vincent Miller seems very well grounded in whatever social sciences happened before the internet and postmodernism. He reviews things like New Social Movements through the lens of the transition in Western Advance Capitalist Democracies from class based politics to identity politics. He correctly notes that the web hasn't so much radically transformed society, just made it much easier for people to explore, investigate and share their interests more than the 'net being a tool for complete social transformation. So Miller not only accurately describes the world of broad internet access but asks important questions about how it is shaping up, how politics are affected and how our society and how real life social relations are changing and being changed by internet communication technology. A most enlightening book.

A personal story of loss and healing which has a universality for all who grieve

At first glance, Kathryn’s book, Better To Have Loved, A True Story of Love, Loss, and Renewal, appears to be a book for people dealing with the loss of a spouse. This book, although it is focused around Kathryn’s personal grief over losing her husband to cancer, has a universality that anyone suffering the death of a loved one can easily relate to and find hope.
I lost my only sister and my two closest friends to cancer in a very short span of time. While reading this book, I realized that I had said, felt or done many of the same things as mentioned in this book. I related to so many things that I felt at times I was reading parts of my own story.
Watching a loved one suffer and slowly slip away from you is a life altering trauma. You will feel so many emotions both during the illness and after the death. This book is a very raw, very real and very honest portrayal of how the word “cancer”, once uttered changes life as you know it. From that point forward, your life changes and you will need to change with it in order to survive and redefine yourself without the person you loved so dearly.
Kathryn takes you on her personal journey of loss and healing. You will learn from her experiences that grieving and healing is a process which takes time. There are stages of grief and everyone goes through them in their own way and at their own pace. She helps you to differentiate between what is normal and what requires outside help. She includes a checklist on how to survive bereavement, which is very helpful. She also includes a section which helps others know how to help someone who is grieving.
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it to others.

While helpful to the grievin, it is also a great read!

This was a very well written book that provides comfort to those going through difficult times. Especially those dealing with the loss of a very cherished loved one. The author shares the emotions of loss and paths to recovery that I believe to be useful in any kind of loss, not just in the loss of a husband or wife. She offers herself up to her readers in a meaningful way. She shares the trials of the trip to recovery and the joy of reaching that recovery.

Better To Have Loved breaths into the reader hope for the future and a sense that peace and acceptance can be gained. Her innate kindness and compassion come through there is no false sweetening of the pain of loss, but only the gentle truth that each in his or her own way and time can work through the sense of tragedy. She gently holds out a hand in understanding the pain of loss that we all will feel at one time or an other. She offers her experiences as a path of light to those who may be grieving. The book will also offer assistance to those not in the process of grieving. Her warm and gentle manner I believe will stay with those who read this book for many years to come and so will be available in the future if the reader has a need for her kind and helpful words.

A Must read for anyone who has Loved and Lost!

This poignant book is sure to move you; it's not only a down-to-earth story of Love, Loss and Renewal, but also one that will uplift and give hope to anyone who has (or will) go through the heart-rendering loss of a loved one or friend. As a social worker and someone who has personally lost several close loved ones, from both a personal and professional perspective, this book will tug your heartstrings yet leave you feeling positive that there is Hope during, and through, grief and loss. It's also a perfect book to give as a gift to anyone who may benefit from seeing and feeling through Kathryn's perspective how to not only survive, but thrive, after the loss of a loved one.

Industry Standard Reference on LTE - Everything you need to know

As a field applications engineer working in the field of test and measurement, I was looking for a book to effectively bring me up to date on the latest standards in LTE testing. My own background cover RF, digital modulation techniques, and other standards, so I came into this book with a base of knowledge to expand into LTE. I make that statement because if you are a casual reader or "just interested", this book is definitely not for you. If you just want a survey of LTE technology, it is provided in Chapter 1, but that is merely 11 of the 400 pages in this tome. For basic knowledge, just google LTE.

If you are a serious student looking to understand the technology, where it stands today, its future limits, and how it is implemented, then look no further than this comprehensive work on LTE. It is already the industry standard, and likely to be the desk reference for any engineer working on LTE. Whatever can be explained in clear english is explained that way, including many diagrams and illustrations to illuminate the text.

The book covers basics of OFDM modulation techniques, equalization, multi-antenna techiniques, link adaptation, scheduling, LTE architeture, and physical transmission concerns. Indeed, an engineer working in LTE must be concerned with everything from antenna design to data formatting to spectral emission shape, and this book covers each of these topics in turn.

On top of everything, there is a well-organized index if you need to jump around the book, a list of abbreviations and acronyms, and a comprehensive list of references for further reading. As with all Academic Press books in this series (see my review on MIMO), it is well bound and will stand up to lots of reading.

If your job description includes (or if you are looking for a job that will include) LTE, buy this book. If you are an interesed amateur, save your money and get some free education on the web first.

Good coverage of the lower layers of LTE

This book does a good job covering the lower layers of LTE from the antenna up to the RLC. I wish it had more detail in the upper layers and the overall network especially the Enhanced Packet Core. It also lacks much material on the security aspects of LTE. I also wish it mentioned how carriers are adopting LTE and migrating EDGE and 3G to LTE. I also felt like the font was too small and made reading for long periods difficult

In short this is a good book if your interest is geared towards learning the physical and link layer aspects of LTE.

Excellent technical resource and foray into mobile communications

This book's main focus is on mobile communication 3G up to LTE (4G) and in particular radio access network (RAN). This is written by experts in this field (Ericsson) who are personally involved in the telecommunications design.

This book starts with a good overview of the telecommunications technology changes starting from GSM, leading to evolution of 4G / LTE. Basics such as spectrum allocation, link adaptation, radio interface architecture, access procedure relating to LTE cell search down to PHY level such as multi antenna techniques are covered. Where necessary, simple mathematical representations or computations, such as bandwidth utilization, channel capacity are shown. It briefly provides a simple overview of the core network (CN) component of system architecture evolution (SAE).

With an engineering background on 802.11, the mathematical coverage on OFDM and single carrier transmission appeals to me.

And for topics such as the access procedure for LTE cell search, it first lists the sequences, which is (1) Acquisition of frequency and symbols synchronization to cell,(2)Acquisition of frame timing of cell, which is determining the start of the downlink frame (3) Determination of physical layer CELL ID of cell. From here, it further delves into the specifics, providing tons of technical background and information. This is the approach used throughout the book, starting with general background information and ending with more technical details.

At times, I find the information too overwhelming for someone not involved in mobile communications design. However, this book remains a good resource both for novices and experts. I do highly recommend this book.
