so this was a big deal to me (and also something towatch out for)

This guide is a must have for anyone prepping for the CLEP Algebra Exam. First of all, this guide is a 2017 edition, so I know that it has the most up to date content. Many of the other guides that I saw were from last year and beyond, so this was a big deal to me (and also something to watch out for). Actually, this guide is pretty thin--definitely much less intimidating than the huge, heavy guides that some of my friends were carrying around! This guide is well written and easy to understand. This guide is broken up into sections, so you can go right to the area that you want to focus on without having to do a ton of searching or reading the guide from cover to cover to get the most out of it, which saved me a lot of time! I also thought that the practice questions were very similar to those on the real test, so I felt more confident about my score. I would recommend this guide to others who are looking for a general idea of what to expect and a good guide for a great price.

About the Author

Ernest W. Maglischo coached swimming for 38 years, working at four universities and two swim clubs. He has won 13 NCAA national championships at the Division II level and 19 conference championships. In 1996 he was honored as the Pacific 10 Conference Swimming Coach of the Year, and he has been named NCAA's Division II coach of the year an unprecedented eight times. He has also received the highest coaching award, the National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy.

Maglischo holds a PhD in exercise physiology from the Ohio State University. He's a member of the College Swimming Coaches Association, the American Swimming Coaches Association, and U.S.A. Swimming, where he serves on the Sports Medicine Committee. Now retired, Maglischo lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

Needlessly cumbersome and obscure

Not for beginners, very academic language, not how-to book
but it is so huge that you can drain out of 300 words one single clear word which will actually answer you question
Drawings are really poor ( he didn't know to draw a human figure in swimming positions! ) and don't add very much to the explanations
Some passages are very obscure ( although I should admit English is not my mother tongue ) but for example I didn't manage to get through the sentence like " the pike position should be established before the legs are leaving the jumping platform" ( about the starts )
And it has a lot of such obscure concepts.

Maglischo Even Better

Swimming theory has advanced significantly since Dr.
Ernest Maglischo wrote Swimming Faster 1982 and
Swimming Even Faster 1993. He opens Swimming
Fastest with an acknowledgement that his views on
propulsion have changed significantly with each
successive book. He writes this book in a more
personal voice than the 'third person authoritative'
style of the previous weighty tome, and I find it
much more readable.
In the largely rewritten and well-illustrated
section on Technique, Maglischo describes his latest
beliefs on effective swimming technique. In some
cases, he allows for differing techniques or styles
of swimming, but general favors one method.
Although he generally agrees with the drag-reducing
fundamentals and front-quadrant stroke timing of the
very popular style coached by Bill Boomer, Emmett
Hines and Terry Laughlin and exemplified by the
efficient, long-reaching front crawl styles of Alex
Popov and Ian Thorpe, he offers much criticism of
what he calls "Stretch-Out" swimming, in which he
says that the emphasis is on stretching forward too
long, and swimming a catch-up style, to increase
stroke length rather than speed.
His less-revised section on Training includes
improved illustrations and sample training routines
used by Janet Evans, Susie O'Neill, Brooke Bennett,
Kieren Perkins, Mike Barrowman, Alex Popov, Penny
Heyns, Tom Dolan and Summer Sanders. It includes
the most thorough look at breathing strategies I
have ever read.
His brief Racing section presents numerous splits of
races by the swimmers mentioned above, at various
distances and strokes.
Essentially, Maglischo has vastly improved what was
already the most thorough and highly-regarded book
in the field.

Perfect inspirational graduation present

Perfect inspirational graduation present, that I found myself wanting to keep. Just great life advice, pieces of wisdom, and moral lessons from some of the most wonderful modern thinkers like Howard Zinn & Noam Chomsky. This is especially great for the more left-minded crowd, as it features several key liberal figures. But there speeches are quite universal anyways, even if you're not a sharer of their particular political views. (I got it as a liberal, for my conservative niece who liked it just as well. The speeches have great range for all political view points, don't let who the contributors are fool you on that.)

PREFACE

This book is intended to provide the student with a clear and thorough presentation of both the theory and application of the fundamental principles of mechanics of materials. Understanding is based on the explanation of the physical behavior of materials under load and then modeling this behavior to develop the theory. Emphasis is placed on the importance of satisfying equilibrium, compatibility of deformation, and material behavior requirements. New Features

Several changes have been made in preparing this, the fourth edition. The following is a list of some of the more important ones.

Improved Pedagogy. The "procedure for analysis" sections, along with a new feature, "important points," are presented using a bulleted list format in order to aid in problem solving and review. Also, clarity throughout n the text has been improved, and new examples have been provided. Photographs. Many new photographs are used throughout the book to explain how the principles of mechanics of materials apply to real-world situations. In some sections they show how materials deform or fail under load in order to provide a better understanding of the terms and concepts. Problems. Many new problems have been added throughout the book, providing a better balance between easy, medium, and difficult applications. In addition, some problems require solution by computer. More than ever before, extra care has been taken in the presentation and solution of the problems, and all the problem sets have been reviewed and the solutions checked and rechecked to ensure both their clarity and numerical accuracy. Revison of Material. Some rewriting was done throughout the book to further refine the explanation of the concepts and, in some cases, broaden their scope. In particular, the material in Chapter 9 now contains a better development of sress transformation, and it includes two new sections involving combined stresses, which can be included under the alternative coverage scheme described below. The subject matter is organized into 14 chapters. Chapter 1 begins with a review of the important concepts of statics, followed by a formal definition of both normal and shear stress, and a discussion of normal stress in axially loaded members and average shear stress caused by direct shear. In Chapter 2 normal and shear strain are defined, and in Chapter 3 a discussion of some of the important mechanical properties of materials is given. Separate treatments of axial load, torsion, and bending are presented in Chapters 4, 5, and 6, respectively. In each of these chapters, both linear-elastic and plastic behavior of the material are considered. Also, topics related to stress concentrations and residual stress are included. Transverse shear is discussed in Chapter 7, along with a discussion of thin-walled tubes, shear flow, and the shear center. Chapter 8 provides a partial review of the material covered in the previous chapters, in which the state of stress resulting from combined loadings is discussed. In Chapter 9 the concepts for transforming multiaxial states of stress are presented. In a similar manner, Chapter 10 discusses the methods for strain transformation, including the application of various theories of failure. Chapter 11 provides a means for a further summary and review of previous material by covering design applications of beams and shafts. In Chapter 12 various methods for computing deflections of beams and shafts are covered. Also included is a discussion for finding the reactions on these members if they are statically indeterminate. Chapter 13 provides a discussion of column buckling, and lastly, in Chapter 14 the problem of impact and the application of various energy methods for computing deflections are considered.

Sections of the book that contain more advanced material are indicated by a star (*). Time permitting, some of these topics may be included in the course. Furthermore, this material provides a suitable reference for basic principles when it is covered in other courses, and it can be used as a basis for assigning special projects.

Alternative Method of Coverage. Some instructors prefer to cover stress and strain transformations first, before discussing specific applications of axial load, torsion, bending, and shear. One possible method for doing this would be first to cover stress and its transformation, Chapter 1 and Chapter 9, followed by strain and its transformation, Chapter 2 and the first part of Chapter 10. The discussion and example problems in these later chapters have been styled so that this is possible. Also, the problem sets have been subdivided so that this material can be covered without prior knowledge of the intervening chapters. Chapters 3 through 8 can then be covered with no loss in continuity. Special Features

Organization and Approach. In order to aid both the instructor and the student, the contents of each chapter are organized into welldefined sections. Selected groups of sections contain an explanation of specific topics, followed by illustrative example problems and a set of homework problems. The topics within each section are often placed in subgroups denoted by boldface titles. The purpose of this is to present a structured method for introducing each new definition or concept and to make the book convenient for later reference and review. Furthermore, important terms in the chapter have been highlighted in boldface to provide a convenient means for review.

Chapter Contents. Each chapter begins with a photo to illustrate a broad range application of the material within the chapter. The "chapter objectives" are then provided to give a general overview of the material that will be covered.

Procedures for Analysis. Found in many sections of the book, this unique feature provides the student with a logical and orderly method to follow when applying the theory. The example problems are then solved using this outlined method in order to clarify its numerical application. It is to be understood, however, that once the relevant principles have been mastered and enough confidence and judgment have been acquired, the student can then develop his or her own procedures for solving problems.

Important Points. This feature provides a review or summary of the most important concepts in a section and highlights the most significant points that should be realized when applying the theory to solve problems.

Conceptual Understanding. Through the use of photographs placed throughout the book, examples of the theory are provided in order to illustrate some of its more important conceptual features and instill the physical meaning of many of the terms used in the equations.

Example Problems. All the example problems are presented in a concise manner and in a style that is easy to understand. New examples have been added throughout the text, and some from the previous edition have been shortened.

Homework Problems. Numerous problems in the book depict realistic situations encountered in engineering practice. It is hoped that this realism will both stimulate the student's interest in the subject and provide a means for developing the skill to reduce any such problem from its physical description to a model or symbolic representation to which the principles may be applied.

Throughout the book there is an approximate balance of problems using either SI or FPS units. Furthermore, in any set, an attempt has been made to arrange the problems in order of increasing difficulty. The answers to all but every fourth problem are listed in the back of the book. To alert the user to a problem without a reported answer, an asterisk (*) is placed before the problem number. Answers are reported to three significant figures, even though the data for material properties may be known with less accuracy. Although this might appear to be poor practice, it is done simply to be consistent and to allow the student a better chance to validate his or her solution. All the problems and their solutions have been independently checked for accuracy. A solid square (•) is used to identify problems that require a numerical analysis or computer application.

Appendices. The appendices of the book provide a source for review and a listing of tabular data. Appendix A provides information on the centroid and the moment of inertia of an area. Appendices B and C list tabular data for structural shapes, and the deflection and slopes of various types of beams and shafts. Appendix D, which is titled "Review for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam," contains typical problems, along with their partial solutions, that are commonly used on FE exams. These problems may also be used for review and practice in preparing for class examinations. Acknowledgments

This book has good problems example. Easy to understand. Even if I am an electrical engineer that needs to know this subject I can learn it without major difficulty. My knowledge with Calculus and engineering mechanic are enough for reading this books.

Hi Readers,

We had a lot of fun writing this series. It was a project that had been on the back-burner for years--waiting until the time was right and our writing schedules aligned. Over 17,000 emails between me and Amy in Australia, Lucy in Spain and Heidi in London. We created a Pub, Sully's, in New York and I so wanted that place to be real. We created a facebook page for the series,wine labels, boarding school uniforms, timelines and many, many brothers. We went overboard (I blame the others, and possibly the wine).

My ever loving gratitude to the other authors in the series--Heidi, Lucy and Amy--for making this one sing.

Wonderful start to the series.

Pursued by the Rogue (Fairy Tales of New York 1) by Kelly Hunter is the first story in a series of four friends, I really enjoyed this story that set the stage of hoe these four women became friend while in boarding school. Skip to ten years later and the story takes off.

All four of the women are strong and talented in their own fields, though none of them are as brainy as Dawn. I was amazed that this intelligent woman felt so inadequate in her appearance then blooms into other perceived inadequates, but she did make a convincing ugly duckling.

Besides the obvious changes in the story, I loved the idea that her true love saw her as a beautiful woman, hence the swan. Finn makes a wonderful hero especially since he had never forgotten Dawn in 10 years.

Wonderful start to friends of four fairytales, dealing with fears and anxieties that are al o real. Ms. Hunter wrote this story in such a way to cause the reader to have great empathy for Dawn and Finn. I was on edge with them at the doctor’s office waiting to hear the test results.

I look forward to the all of the other friend’s stories. Each of them need an Happily Ever After. The way all good fairytales should end.

A short but well told romance in the ‘Fairy Tales of New York’ series, I enjoyed my first story by this author. Smart, driven and socially awkward Dawn Turner has been in love with smart, driven, not socially awkward Finbar Sullvan since she was a teenager. During their younger years, Dawn and Fin had a single indiscretion that went further and had more repercussions that either of them ever planned. After 10 years of no contact, can these two put aside their past to build a future?

For someone who was hurt by and didn’t like secrets, Dawn kept some big things secrets. Even with that in mind, I still liked her because she wanted to be a good person. She didn’t take things for granted and she wasn’t spiteful with her actions or in-actions. It’s a credit to the writing because it’s a fine line between an angst filled heroine and a whiny heroine – Dawn remained the former. There was enough character growth and development for her that I didn’t understand her choices.

I thought Fin was great. He had enough boy-next-door humor, humility, and moments of vulnerability without being too contrived that I really wanted him to get his girl. His patience with Dawn was refreshing but I was also glad to see that he didn’t present himself as the doormat either.

There were some delicate topics that were introduced but got swept under the rug that I wish didn’t happen but I also understand that this is a novella. I highly recommend this, if you’re in the mood for a quick but satisfying read about a couple of 20-somethings falling in love and getting their HEA.

Lovely novella , great start to a series

A wonderful start to the Fairytales of New York series; Ms Hunter brings a fresh look at The Ugly Duckling fairytale.

Dawn Turnsr is a successful biotech company owner , but for all of her success, she's a lonely women, of her own choice;as a young girl at boarding school she very often felt like an outsider the ugly duckling amongst her girlfriends , sent away by her parents to her Aunts in New York she feels unloved.
Everyone she takes a chance on loving , she feels she looses, so when her freind Kathleen's brother Finnbar takes intrest in her though she has an incredible night with him, she pushes him away.

Ten years later , encouraged by her school friends to get together for a reunion , she never imagined running into Finn also ; or for that matter for Finn to still be interested in her! Finn is everything she feels she is not, handsome outgoing popular violinist , travels the world and could have any women he wants. So, why want an ugly ducking like her,, with her secrets, even without them her family did not want her..

Finn has spent the last ten years thinking about Dawn , and her brush off ten years ago, he did not understand it then , he was sure they had a connection, no relationship since has felt as right . Seeing Dawn. She is even more beautiful now and he is determined to get her to agree to date him again.

Dawn has set up her line of defense , so she doesn't get hurt, determined to be the one in control, no lose or pain for her and she flat out tells Finn , she is willing to casually date but it is sex only, no commitments . Finn accepts her terms but it's just to get his foot in the door because he wants more , always has! Finn has to work to break through her line of defense and unlock the secrets Dawn keeps , along with the one she keeps from him.
Can Finn get Dawn to see what everyone else really sees? Can he get her to reveal her secrets? Can he get her to give them a real chance?
