Great for intermediate digital manga artists
    By Riven
This book focuses on the steps taken to create a complete digital manga-style art piece. It isn't by any means a drawing guide for beginners. If you're currently into drawing manga art and coloring digitally, or you are curious of the process one goes through to create digital manga art, this book is fantastic. Each illustration is shown with conceptual sketches, line art as well as varying stages of the coloring process (blocking in solid colors, adding shading and highlights, etc.) Don't expect this book to teach you anatomy or in depth brush techniques. It's primarily a showcase of the art process done from start to finish. With a slightly more in depth explanation of how each work is done, I would have given this book 5 stars. It earns a solid 4. I will also note that a lot of anime drawing guidebooks in English actually feature comparatively poor art, but the artists in this book definitely have the talent to be producing quality manga in Japan.

Wonderful book, dont fall for the bad ratings you see here
    By Reace
Despite the low rating I saw on this book I then realized that only 2 people had bought it anyways, so I went ahead and got this book, along with the Shonen Manga Action Packed book.

Im gonna start off by saying these books are in no way made for beginner manga artists. They don't teach you the basics, like how to draw heads, eyes, hair, etc. The way the book starts off, its already implying you already know the basics and you have been drawing long enough to know how to sketch and create characters.

Each drawing featured shows briefly how the sketch was done, before adding hair, clothes, background, inking, etc. Then it shows the coloring process, then the finished product. This process is shown for every single drawing or painting in the book. Each artist has their own style of drawing and coloring too, so it's a mix of traditional and digital artwork.

The book is really heavy too, which is good in my personal opinion, it means there's a lot of content contained in there. Meaning more to learn, more pictures to look at.. Im a very happy customer :D
So, since its heavy its also a really thick book too, but the cover is glossy and not hard at all. So it might kind of hover over pages when you close the book, (like it wont close all the way) after heavy use.. like holding the book open for a long time while youre reading the steps and looking at artwork. Which is what I expect, since I like to take in all the details, heh.. Theres also a lot of different poses, themes, character designs and different styles of coloring and drawing, so theres alot to take in here. Theres at least 350 pages in this book. Im not exaggerating.

Overall Im very pleased. When the package came in, the book was wrapped tightly in plastic covering, which was also wrapped in loose plastic covering. There was no damage done to the book at all.

It is certainly not a coffee table book, as I read in the other review. If you actually read the steps and understand how the process is done, you can learn from it and probably adopt some ideas for yourself from this book.

I loved this book from the moment i saw it at work lol ( i work for amazon)
i agree this book is only for people who already have a good idea as to how to draw and how to work digital programs but the book is so amazing!

How to Taste: A Guide to Enjoying Wine, by Jancis Robinson

Hailed by Jerry Shriver in USA Today as “the woman who makes the wine world gulp when she speaks,” Jancis Robinson created in How to Taste a classic for connoisseurs of all levels and the first introduction of its kind to focus on practical tasting exercises. Now fully revised and updated, Robinson's renowned guide proves once again that learning about wine can be just as engaging as drinking it.

What better way to learn about wine than to taste it?

Written in Robinson's trademark accessible style, the new How to Taste features thoroughly updated vintages and producers as well as up-and-coming wine regions and styles. Incorporating wines that are both easily obtainable and reasonably priced, Robinson's lessons are separated into complementary portions of theory and practice to help you both learn and taste your way to wine expertise.

One of the world's best-loved authorities on wine, Robinson explains first how to get the most out of the flavor of your wine and food, and then about specific grapes and the wines themselves. By the time you finish the book, you will have learned how to recognize the most popular grape varieties from Chardonnay and Riesling to Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, and why a good sparkling wine is always better than cheap champagne. You will discover how to judge sweetness, acidity, and fruitiness as well as the difference between the length and the weight of a wine. You will also be given practical advice for dealing with wine in the real world: how to choose from a wine list, organize your own wine tastings, and pair wines with specific foods.

From the armchair to the wine shop and back to the table, How to Taste will transform anyone on any level into a confident connoisseur who can leave faltering sips behind and have fun along the way.

    Amazon.com Review
Whether Montessori or Merlot, kindergarten or Cabernet, the importance of a good instructor during the formative years is crucial. That's why newcomers to the world of wine could do a lot worse than having a corkscrew in one hand and a copy of Jancis Robinson's How to Taste in the other. A revision of 1983's Masterglass and published in the U.K. under the superior title Jancis Robinson's Wine-Tasting Workbook, How to Taste is a primer by a certified Master of Wine and star of the PBS series Jancis Robinson's Wine Course. From acidity to Australian Shiraz, oak to Oregon Pinot, Robinson delivers chapters of information and theory, intermingled with shaded "Practice" exercises, presented in a style as off-dry as one of the author's beloved Rieslings (the tannin in a lesser vintage Barolo is "like sucking on a matchstick"). Sometimes tuition at Jancis U. runs high: the lesson on sugar/acid balance culminates with expensive Sauterne "Practice." And even if Robinson risks, by dropping words like "charred" and "umami" early in the book, sending novices back to tear open a fresh box of Franzia, vinous virgins are encouraged to stick with it. By the time they get to the glossary at book's end, they'll be identifying wines at blind tastings with professional accuracy--which, Robinson encouragingly reveals, and she ought to know, is about 50 percent. --Tony Mason

A must read for anyone learning about wine!
    By A. Alvarado
As the title suggests, this book is certainly a 101 course in how to taste so that you can increase the pleasure of your wine tasting experience. Nearly half of the book is dedicated to how we taste and although this much coverage may initially seem a bit over the top, every page offers new information. If her writing style were described as a wine, I'd say it is a crisp, clean, beautifully aged, full-bodied, well balanced wine, seasoned with a warm toastiness, and hints of dark fruit. She's direct and uses an instructional and educational format, yet injects humor at every turn, while offering the reader practice exercises to fully comprehend the information. Her wealth of knowledge on the subject is evident in her details as she covers every aspect of tasting, examples of how it relates to wine, the flavors in wine, what causes those flavors, how the flavors compare to foods, the grapes that will taste different in each terroir, and how the wine-making process will further influence the flavor of the wine.

She begins with taste, at its most basic level, describing the art and science of it. We do it every day, just as we breathe, without awareness, and yet, once we become fully aware of how our senses react to different flavors and aromas, we begin to have a deeper appreciation of the experience. Right from the beginning, she offers a practical exercise to try to demonstrate this. Have someone blindfold you and offer you different foods with the same texture to see whether or not you can tell them apart (slices of a plum and nectarine, for example). Then try it with similar bodied wines (a merlot and a cabernet sauvignon, for example) to see if you can identify the variety.

Our senses of sight, smell, and taste are so closely interconnected that when we consciously engage all three, the taste experience is heightened. In fact, I now have a deeper appreciation of these senses and for my father's unfortunate condition. He lost his sense of smell in an accident when he was young and whenever he eats, he has to wait until the food reaches the back of his throat before he can tell you if it pleases him. I never understood this until I tried the exercise Jancis suggested. Hold your nose while eating something you're familiar with. So I tried this and was surprised that I couldn't taste the flavor, even as it reached the back of my throat. So, I suppose the flavor experience is different for us all. Still, I couldn't help but feel sad for my father because he's unable to enjoy the full flavor of foods. Anyone who has ever had a cold can probably relate to how tasteless foods are when their nasal passages are blocked.

Jancis elaborates on the importance of sight, smell and taste and how each carries a different message to our brains. The first thing we notice is either how something looks (how appetizing it appears) or how it smells (when walking by a restaurant or my mom's kitchen...yum). This desire builds within us and creates an expectation of how great the food will taste, our mouths begin to water and we can almost taste it at this point. Notice what happens when we actually take a sip or a bite. "Different substances give off different vapors" (14). Think of wine versus bread, or steak on the grill versus a bowl of sugar. The strongest vapors you can taste without actually putting them into your mouth. Alongside this lesson, she illustrates the sweetness in wine, the sugar content, and what that does to our mouth. There's a practice exercise to determine where on your tongue you experience this best, so you'll notice the amount of sweetness the next time you try a wine. Throughout the book, she teaches you something about taste, (such as this lesson on sweetness), then she relates it to wine, and includes some very useful charts divided into red and white categories.

The major tastes (acidity, sweetness, salt, and bitterness) are described in depth and how balance in wine is important and signifies quality. If we stop to notice, different parts of our tongue (front, back, center, and sides) are sensitive to these different tastes. She elaborates on the wines that exhibit these flavors and points out which regions do this superbly. She compares the regional differences in wine-making and terminology. Other flavors such as tannins, astringency, weight, alcohol content, dryness, and cleanliness are covered at length. She includes bad aromas and flavors that you may encounter in wine such as oxidation, sulfur, TCA, reduction, carbon dioxide, and volatile acidity. The quality of a wine can be determined by its cleanliness, balance, and length and all senses should be engaged during this.

Jancis explains what to look for visually (deposits, range of color in reds and whites, lighter at the rim, and legs), aromatically (and that one should avoid strong perfumes, after shaves and food smells to properly taste a wine) and finally when you taste the wine, what temperature it should be served and what foods (mints, gum, vinegar) to avoid to fully enjoy it. Guidelines for storing, chilling, serving, decantering, choosing the right glasses, spitting (or not to), and keeping notes are provided.

There is an entire section on the predominant grapes, their nuances, their distinguishing flavors, their attributes, what regions/climates they grow best in, regional differences/names, if it is used for blending, whether or not it is common practice to age it, and what vessel to age it in. The last section explains how to pair wine with food and as we discussed in class, the old rules are thrown right out the window. One rule to follow is a full-bodied wine would pair well with full flavored foods, and a lighter wine with lighter foods. Some of the old standards apply where the acidity in a white wine would best pair with seafood and a full-bodied red with a steak, but since it's a matter of taste, these are just recommendations.

Jancis' charts, exercises, and tasting glossary at the end provide us with the right amount of information to make the most out of our tasting experience. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to understand wine and get the most pleasure out of drinking wine. I now have a deeper understanding of the subject and as a result, a deeper appreciation of our senses and of wine tasting.

    Great for the wine newbie!
    By Every Shining Thing
This is a really great primer on wine, and I would think it would be especially good if you have the time and inclination to try all of the "homework". (I drink very little wine, so I've not really been a great student of the book, but it's interesting to read when I'm trying something new!) The only little disappointment was that the edition of the book I bought was not the same as the edition I had checked out of my library - it's smaller, so the images and text are smaller than the book I first read on loan. However, it is a newer edition, so at least the information is up to date.

    Taster's Choice
    By Bevetroppo
See the Amazon review dated September 29, 2001 for an excellent treatment of this book.
Since I first became interested in blind wine tasting almost 25 years ago, I have searched for a book that provided a complete and authoritative guide to describing the taste of different wines and grapes-a reference point or sounding board, if you will, against which to calibrate my own impressions. Never mind that the essence of blind tasting and the apprehension of quality depend on forming your own innate vocabulary of scents and flavors. There have been many times when I have struggled, and have just wanted an expert to tell me what the heck a textbook Crozes-Hermitage, for example, is supposed to taste like.
Jancis Robinson's Guide To Wine Tasting is an excellent contribution to this subject for beginners. I didn't realize until around page 150 that the book had originally been published in 1983 under the somewhat unfortunate title, Masterglass, but I think we can forgive her this youthful indulgence. Because over time, she has truly become the heir apparent to mantle of most prolific British wine commentator, eclipsing my other English heroes Michael Broadbent, Hugh Johnson, and Clive Coates. With multiple books, a TV show, videos, a weekly column, a new DVD and a website ... she is, to paraphrase wine newcomer Howard Stern, the Queen of All Wine Media.
This book systematically lays out the factors that contribute to the taste of a wine, and how to appreciate them. It follows the model of a "wine course," in that each chapter combines theory and practice, the practice consisting of specific instructions of what wines to try that best illustrate the principles being taught. Like all good teachers about wine, she staunchly advocates blind tasting as the key to developing your own wine appreciation faculties. Just keep in mind that to pursue the practice, you'll need a willing accomplice to pour the disguised wines for you so you can really benefit.
Two things make this slender volume particularly noteworthy and a valuable contribution for amateurs of all stripes. First, Jancis is one of the most democratic and unintimidating wine writers on the planet. She goes out of her way to make beginners feel at ease, correctly observing that in many cases the less you know, the more accurate your initial impressions can be. She also makes it clear that even experts routinely embarrass themselves at this game, which is half the fun and often offers a better learning experience than actually guessing correctly. No one interested in learning more about wine appreciation will feel condescended to within the pages of this book.
Second, I give Jancis a lot of credit for being willing to describe specific flavors that derive from major grapes, variations in winemaking practice, and geographical differences, since that is after all why I most wanted to read the book. It is not as detailed or quite as specific as I would like, but it does an admirable job nonetheless and can refresh the core knowledge of a more experienced taster just as well as empower a newcomer.
I don't have much to criticize about the book. There's a very bad typo on page 47 where Brunello di Montalcino is described as coming from the nebbiolo grape (instead of the sangiovese clone, brunello), but this is correctly stated later on. I also think the selection of some of the second-tier grapes she characterizes is a little odd (why even bother with trebbiano if she says it's undistinguished, when she ignores other Italian white grapes that make wonderful wines). Finally, there are a few pages whose layout contains very little information (I counted one with fewer than 50 words) and since this isn't an art book, it gives the appearance of padding.
Nevertheless, this book provides all the basics of what you need to know to not just enjoy tasting wine, but to actually appreciate it.

Clearly written, contains some helpful tips, but title is misleading and some of the retouches don't look so great.
    By rasi2290
First of all, this book should not be called "Professional Portrait Retouching Techniques for Photographers". It should be called "Fast and Easy Retouching for Professional Photographers". Many of the techniques in this book are useful, and especially if you're a Photoshop rookie, you'll probably benefit from learning them. But as Scott says himself in the intro, these aren't pro retouching techniques.

I also felt there was quite a bit of redundancy in this book. For example, nearly every retouch you do will involve working on a duplicate layer and then using layer masks and layer opacity to control where, and how much of your retouch shows through. This is a crucial step and Scott is right to include it, but he gives it a whole paragraph each time, as though you haven't already learned this step in every other chapter. Maybe this was done to allow a user to skip directly to any chapter, but I still think this could have been explained in detail just once, in the beginning, and then simply referred to.

I disagree with a few specific techniques: in one chapter, Scott recommends using the dodge/burn tools on a gray layer set to soft light mode, which is essentially painting black and white on that layer to adjust the underlying lights and darks. But this completely defeats the purpose of using the dodge/burn tools, which can be set to automatically only brighten your highlights and darken your shadows while ignoring adjacent pixels.

I wasn't thrilled with the final result of the neck retouch (featured on back cover); it looks rather phony and overly blurred to my eyes.

Since I called out one I didn't like, to be fair, I'll call out one I liked: eyelashes. I like the chapter on darkening/accentuating eyelashes.

Everything is cleary written and illustrated, and for the most part, these are useful techniques to learn, especially if you don't really want to learn how to master Photoshop - just get in and out. I have 10 years of experience working with portraits in Photoshop, and I found a few useful tips myself, so I think a novice would probably benefit from this book.

    THE Bible on Retouching
    By Glyn Dewis
If you ever find yourself sat infront of your computer screen staring at some portrait shots you've taken, Photoshop open and saying "Now what?" or quite simply you want to make your portrait shots look their very best, then I can't say it any simpler than You Need This Book!

`Professional Portrait Retouching Techniques for Photographers using Photoshop' is the latest book by Photographer and Photoshop Guru Scott Kelby and in my own opinion this time he's out done himself and produced what I predict will become the Retouching Bible! Seriously...the book is that good!

With what appears to be an infinite supply of Photoshop books out there lining shelves in book stores it can be incredibly difficult knowing which ones/s to get especially when each and every one promises to `share the secrets of the pros'. The risk of possibly wasting your hard earned cash on a book that you'll glance through disappointingly and then never pick up again is real, and one that I'm sure most of us have done on more than one occasion.

However, this latest book changes things. We now have a book that not only gives us techniques that are easy to follow and apply but a book that eliminates the feeling of `What do I do now?'

This new book is full to the brim of techniques that work and work extremely well and what's more they're written and explained in a way that makes them easy to understand and then apply to your own work.

If you're familiar with Scott's Digital Photography Book series [Link] and the one page, one tip style then this is kind of written in the same way. Now obviously I don't mean that each technique takes just one page to explain but what I do mean is that the techniques don't drag on and confuse the heck out of you; Scott gets to the point and in a way that feels like he's there with you..."Do this, now do that...there you go!" Simple!

Some folks have `complained' in the past about Scott's humour in his writing but I think even `they' are going to be impressed this time. I don't know if it's an intentional decision on Scott's behalf but this latest book does seem to be written in a way that's slightly different to what we've become accustomed to, but that's definitely a good thing. Personally I like Scott's writing style...I'm a very visual person so for me to read, I need to be entertained as well as informed but this latest book will definitely appeal to all.

So what does the book cover?
The book is made up of 7 Chapters each covering a different area of retouching and on most occasions showing more than one technique to achieve the same/similar result so you can choose which fits in best with your way of working...

    Chapter 1: Retouching Eyes

    Increasing Contrast in the Iris
Darkening the Outer Rim of the Iris
Adding More Life to the Eyes
    Enhancing and/or Creating Catch Lights
Brightening the Whites of the Eyes
    Removing Eye Veins
    Changing Eye Colour
    Reducing Dark Circles Under Eyes
    Making Eyes Larger (or Smaller)
Swapping One Eye for the Other
    Enhancing Eyelashes
    Creating Beautiful Eyebrows
    Making Fuller Eyebrows
    Darkening the Eyebrows
Sharpening Eyes to Make Them Sparkle

    Chapter 2: Retouching Skin

    Removing Blemishes
    How to Avoid Plastic-Looking Skin
    Basic "Quickie" Skin Softening
    Softening Skin While Retaining Texture
Softening Skin & Adding Texture Back In
    High Pass Skin Softening
    Softening Skin Using Channels
    Reducing or Removing Wrinkles
    Removing Hot Spots
    Balance Skin Tones
    Reducing Stubble
    Applying Digital Makeup
    Creating Porcelain-Looking Skin
    Sharpening Portraits

    Chapter 3: Reshaping Facial Features

    Reshaping the Face and Head
    Making Features More Symmetrical
Sculpting the Face by Dodging & Burning

    Chapter 4: Retouching Hair

    Adding Highlights to Hair
    Removing Stray Hair Strands
    Fixing Gaps in Hair
    Changing Hair Colour
    Darkening a Part Line
    Hiding Roots

Chapter 5: Retouching the Lips and Mouth

    Making Lips Larger
    Creating Glossy Lips
    Applying or Tweaking Lipstick
Changing the Shade of Lip Colour
    Repairing Teeth
    Whitening Teeth and Reducing Yellowing

    Chapter 6: Slimming and Trimming

    Overall Slimming
Slimming One Person in a Group Shot
Reducing a Double Chin & Thinning the Face
    Thinning Arms or Legs
    Getting Great Abs
Fixing Clothes (Lumps, Bagging & Folds)

    Chapter 7: My 5-, 15-, and 30 Minute Retouches

    Retouching Checklist
    My Five-Minute Retouch
    My 15-Minute Retouch
    My 30-Minute Retouch

Now this Chapter is the icing on the cake! Sure it's ok to know all these different techniques but when do you apply them, and in what order and more to the point how do you decide what needs doing anyway?

In Chapter 7 Scott goes through 3 retouches from start to finish...each more involved than the next; a 5 minute, a 15 minute and a 30 minute retouch covering techniques explained throughout the book and what's more there's an included `Check List' that you can use during your own retouching that goes through the kind of questions you should be asking yourself and that will help you to decide what to do.

    Summary
As Photographers we should all aim to get the best `out of camera' images we can but it doesn't stop there! The money and time we've all invested, and continue to do so, to improve our skills still doesn't take away the fact that EVERY image requires some form of editing...even if it's adding a little more contrast and some sharpening.

Being proficient in Photoshop is all part of being a photographer just as knowing what to do in the dark room was in the days of film and this book will give you all you need to finish off your portraits and show them off at their very best.

No matter how proficient you may be in Photoshop you will DEFINITELY learn some valuable techniques amongst the books 384 pages, oh and although the book is written in such a way that you can dive into any section you want, be sure NOT to skip the introduction as there's some valuable hints and tips plus details of the book's accompanying website that includes downloads for you to use too.

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Scott Kelby's best book so far!...
    By David Cuerdon
Scott Kelby's best book so far!...
and the very best portrait retouching book for photographers on the market today.

This book is NOT for you if...

You are a professional full time retoucher. The techniques Scott demonstrates are primarily for photographers who retouch their own photos. I'm not saying retouchers won't benefit from this book. I know quite a few pro retouchers that could learn a thing or two from this book, but this book is more focused on the needs of photographers. Those who want to make their photography look as professional, polished and above all, as competitive as they can. Scott's techniques are simple, straight forward, and easy to follow. Best of all they are FAST. I do some work as a high end retoucher and it is not uncommon to spend a day or two retouching one photo. Scott discusses these high end retouching techniques but does not dwell on them. Scott's techniques are geared toward 99% of the photography produced today by portrait, wedding, and commercial photographers. Photographers who need to make their photos look their best in a reasonable amount of time.

What I like best about this book...

Scott has provided an extremely thorough check list for retouching photos. One of the questions I hear all the time is, "How do I know what I need to fix in a photo?" Well Scott's check list has you covered. He lists about 50 items or so that are commonly retouched, everything from sharpening eyes, to reducing hot spots, to body sculpting is listed . Scott also points out, very importantly, that you are probably not going to actually retouch everything on the list. You might have a photo that only needs two items from the list retouched or you might have to do twenty, but you will most likely never have to retouch everything on this list. The idea is you can go through the list and make note of what needs to be addressed and what doesn't.

I also really like Scott's, "12 Things you need to know to make your Retouching Easier". My favorite piece of advice from the "12 Things", is "#2: Walk Away after a while: If you've been retouching for a while, you start seeing everything as a problem to be retouched, and after about an hour, most folks start to over retouch and not realize it..." I wish I would of had this advice ten years ago!

Another really helpful part of the book is Scott's retouching workflows. Scott offers, "The 5-Minute Retouch", "The 15-Minute Retouch", and "The 30-Minute Retouch". These are perfect for the working photographer! Simply pick the workflow you have time for. You want to show something quick to your portrait client while they are still in your studio? Try Scott's "5-Minute Retouch" to whet their appetite. You'll be amazed the quality you can produce in just five minutes!

All of this information is provided in Scott's easy conversational manor with a big dose of his wacky sense of humor! What I have always liked best about Scott's books, DVDs, live classes, etc., is that Scott always makes you feel like your a friend just sitting down at the computer with him, having a few laughs and learning some really cool stuff! Maybe even have a beer or two...(Scott doesn't drink so I'll have his too, hic ;-)

    In summary...

If you are a photographer that does any kind of people shooting, whether it's portraits, weddings, or commercial, and you are doing your own retouching, then you need this book. I guarantee your photos are going to look amazing!

    A Quick Disclaimer:

I was the "Technical Editor" on this book. The tech editor gets to go over the book looking for any Photoshop goofs or maybe a procedure that isn't clear, etc. There were very few problems I was able to point out to Scott, after all he is, Scott Kelby! To be completely honest, it was a cake job and I was definitely overpaid. Don't tell Scott ;-)
So my point is I worked for Scott on this book and you might think I am biased. Maybe I am biased, but look at it this way who better than I, someone who is both a professional photographer and retoucher, someone who has read all of Scott's books (or at least skimmed them ;-), to know that this is Scott's best book to date? As a mater of fact I at least skim almost every retouching book that gets published each year.
Now I know a few cynical types will post comments on how I am brown nosing or sucking up to the boss... so be it. Long before I ever received a paycheck from Scott Kelby's company, I was a Scott Kelby fan.

My son does not particularly enjoy reading himself, but this book series is one that he happily read. I highly recommend for any child that is interested in animals and some of the gross and interesting things that they do. We went to the zoo after reading this series too and my son had a ball seeing some of the animals from this series. He thinks these books are cool.

    Review
This is a remarkable achievement - at once a detailed history and an astute assessment of Marvel, and particularly its symbiosis with Hollywood since the release of Iron Man in 2008. In the charting the rise of Marvel Studios and the strategic formulation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, authors Flanagan, McKenny and Livingstone provide an intimate, enlightening portrait of the company that has reshaped popular cinema on a global scale and effectively reinvented the Hollywood studio system. Thomas Schatz, Mary Gibbs Jones Centennial Chair of the Department of Radio-Television-Film, The University of Texas at Austin, USA The Marvel Cinematic Universe is the most audacious innovation in the history of the blockbuster. It is a transformation that exists beyond the individual film, both off in the Asgardian world of the studio imaginary and in the spinner-racks of local comics stores. The Marvel Studios Phenomenon takes it all in-the whole transmedial ball of wax-and shows what can happen when we give corporate form the same close attention we give our favorite movies, television shows, and comic books. Flanagan, McKenny, and Livingstone show how "It's All Connected," everything from character and story through strategic decisions and fan communities. This book is both up-to-the-minute and sure to be a touchstone when we look back at Hollywood's ability to reinvent storytelling-and itself-for the 21st century. J.D. Connor, Assistant Professor of Film and Media Studies and History of Art, Yale University, USA The Marvel Studios Phenomenon is a robust, broad examination of how Marvel has developed across media via analysis of a range of themes, characters, films and TV shows. Mel Gibson, Senior Lecturer in Childhood Studies, Northumbria University Newcastle, UK, and Comics Scholar and Consultant

The tumultuous changes of the past decade, including China’s economic rise and the financial meltdown, were just the beginning. The next cataclysmic wave is surging relentlessly ahead, demanding leaders who can steer their companies through complexity and change. Drawn from original research conducted jointly with foresight company Z-Punkt and further analyzed by Hay Group, Leadership 2030 uncovers six megatrends that will dramatically impact organizations’ markets, cultures, systems, and processes:
    1. Globalization 2.0: Asia dominates the global economy.
    2. Climate change: Sustainability becomes imperative.
    3. Individualism: Freedom of choice erodes loyalty.
    4. Digitization: Boundaries blur between private and working lives.
    5. Demographic changes: Aging populations intensify the talent war.
    6. Converging technologies: The sharpest tech shift in history is around the corner. Research findings and case studies provide compelling evidence of each megatrend and highlight the skills, capabilities, and attitudes leaders must cultivate, such as adaptability, collaboration, cultural sensitivity, strategic thinking, meaning creation, and more. In the rush to produce quarterly profits in chaotic conditions, the longer view is often obscured. This forward-thinking book helps businesses everywhere prepare for the seismic changes on the horizon.

    Review

“Leaders wondering if their three- and five- year plans (and beyond) are sustainable will find answers in this insightful read.” --T+D magazine

    From the Back Cover

Massive global forces will reshape your business by the year 2030. Formidable competition from China, environmental pressures, talent wars, and technological leaps will divide the short-term thinkers from the prudent few looking for long-range opportunities. This book gives you a sophisticated futuring team of your own.

Drawn from research conducted by Hay Group, a global management consultancy, and Z_punkt, an international leader in strategic foresight analysis, Leadership 2030 pinpoints six converging megatrends, and provides direction for leading your organization through profound change:

    1. Globalization 2.0: Asia is in economic ascent, with China and others adding vast numbers of middle-class consumers and excluding Western firms from intraregional trade. Strategic leaders will tap into these expanding markets—thinking and acting locally, forging alliances—and compete with powerful challengers.

    2. Environmental crisis: Critical natural resources grow scarce and climate change more threatening. Creative leaders will balance rising costs with social imperatives to cut their carbon footprint.

    3. Individualization and value pluralism: Customers and employees expect attention to their individual needs, dismissing the concept of loyalty. Attuned leaders will create opportunities for customized offerings and build enduring relationships with diverse employees.

    4. The digital era: Young digital natives conflate working and personal lives and demand unprecedented transparency. Wise leaders will act with integrity—or jeopardize their reputations.

    5. Demographic change: A rapidly aging population sparks full-scale battles for talent. Sensitive leaders will build multigenerational workplaces and manage their competing demands.

    6. Technological convergence: Nanotechnology and biotechnology merge, creating a massive wave of technological advances. Collaborative leaders will tap into new product markets and forge links with competitors to work on complex R&D programs.

These six megatrends should not be seen in isolation, but as an economic and social matrix impacting every organization—from multinationals trying to stay competitive as customers and capital shift East…to mid-sized companies trying to carve out sustainable niche markets…to tiny startups trying to attract talented people.

To guide their organizations through this massive change, leaders will need to shift from being egocentric to being altrocentric, with a wide range of competencies and a focus on the great diversity of employees and consumers that will be facing them.

Thought-provoking analyses assess the transformative effects of the megatrends on leaders and their organizations. Case studies, examples, interviews, and data drive home the evidence. Fictional profiles clarify the effects each megatrend has on decision-making processes. Together, they make Leadership 2030 your most sweeping, nuanced guide to the monumental challenges ahead.

Georg Vielmetter, Ph.D., is a member of Hay Group’s European Leadership Team and the regional director–Europe of Hay Group’s Leadership and Talent Practice. He works with executives and top teams on leadership transformation, and he also publishes and speaks on these topics. He is an alumnus of the German National Academic Foundation, and a member of the German Sociological Association as well as of the German Society for Philosophy.

Yvonne Sell, Ph.D., is the director of Leadership and Talent–UK & Ireland for Hay Group where, as part of driving the leadership and talent practice, she regularly provides press commentary and conference presentations on a wide range of leadership issues. She also works with Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis on researching emotional intelligence. .

Twenty years ago, the Internet was not yet commercialized. Desktop computers were the hot new tools. China was an isolated country that exported trinkets.

Today, connectivity to customers, suppliers, and workers scattered across the globe is ubiquitous. Economic troubles in one region lash the others. China is on the brink of overtaking the United States as the world’s largest economy.

And tomorrow? Are you ready to steer your organization through the next tumultuous era of complexity and change? Are you developing the skills, capabilities, and attitudes required of leaders in the decades ahead?

Leadership 2030 provides a detailed, wide-ranging picture of the most dramatic megatrends now reshaping organizations and impacting markets, cultures, systems, and processes. Informed by foresight analysis, case studies, original research, extensive conversations, and the leadership findings gathered by the international Hay Group, Leadership 2030 brings clarity to the global challenges ahead:

    • Economic power is shifting to Asia, creating fearsome competition.

    • Demographic pressures are escalating the war for talent.

    • Deteriorating environmental conditions are putting financial stressors on organizations.

    • Freedom of choice is eroding loyalty.

    • Boundaries are blurring between private and working lives.

    • Nanotechnology and biotechnology are merging, triggering the sharpest tech shift in history.

Leadership 2030 ties together the interlocking effects of each megatrend on the business environment, highlighting new strategies and new leadership skills required to survive. In the rush to produce quarterly profits in chaotic conditions, the longer view is often obscured. This expansive, forward-thinking book helps businesses everywhere prepare for the seismic changes taking shape on the horizon.

Valuable resource for any organisation's long-term planning
    By John Gibbs
Change is in the air, but it is difficult to get a grip on exactly what is changing, how and why, and what the future will look like as a result, according to Georg Vielmetter and Yvonne Sell in this book. The book contains the authors’ best attempts to imagine the future based on key megatrends which they have identified in current global society.

The six megatrends described in the book are:

    • Globalization 2.0, in which economic power is shifting from old economies to fast-developing Asian markets
    • Environmental crisis, with critical resources becoming scarcer and climate change bringing a range of threats
    • Individualization and value pluralism, which will create niche opportunities, but also require far greater sensitivity and agility
    • Digitalization, which generates unprecedented transparency, requiring greater attention to reputation management
    • Demographic change, which will bring a shrinking workforce and a war for talent as populations age
    • Technological convergence, which will place huge demands on companies to stay ahead of the curve

The authors provide further ideas for consideration by outlining a number of ways in which the megatrends might reinforce each other, and a number of dilemmas which are predicted to create increasing decision-making difficulties for leaders of organizations.

There is plenty of room for debating the likely severity and effect of some of these trends. For example, resource scarcities frequently turn out to be less imminent and less severe than expected. Nonetheless it is much better to have thought through possible future scenarios than to be caught completely unawares when predictable events occur. The authors have undertaken extensive research in coming up with their predictions, and the book provides a valuable input for any organization’s long-term planning.

Foresight analysis: Valuable lessons to be learned from six megatrends and their possible/probable implications
    By Robert Morris
I am in substantial debt to Georg Vielmetter and Yvonne Sell for sharing their thoughts about unprecedented disruptions that will continue to occur in what has become a global marketplace. They wrote this book in response to questions such as these: "Exactly what is changing? What are the implications for organizations and their leaders in the immediate and longer term? How will this affect the way that leaders lead? What will leadership look like by the year 2030?" They and their colleagues at the Hay Group set out to identify the main drivers of change. "How could we systematically analyze these drivers and their implications? What would be the right framework for such a study?"

The Leadership 2030 Research Process consisted of eight steps: Determine methodology and conceptual framework; identify current megatrends; select most impactful megatrends; survey business leaders; analyze each megatrend and the implications; analyze the effects of all megatrends in combination; draw conclusions on consequences for leaders; and identify how leaders should respond." The answers to the aforementioned questions are provided in this book.

Vielmetter and Sell focus on six megatrends in terms of time, reach, and impact:

    1. Globalization 2.0 (Pages 13-32)
    2. The Environmental Crisis (33-55)
    3. Individualism and Value Pluralism (57-75)
    4. The Digital Era (77-96)
    5. Demographic Change (97-115)
    6. Technological Convergence (117-137)

As the nine mini-case studies Vielmetter and Sell include correctly indicate, the nature and extent of a megatrend's significance -- potential implications and consequences -- can vary from one organization to the next. They also have a great deal to say about the unique leadership challenges that these megatrends pose. For example, with regard to technological convergence, "Scientific progress in fields such as nanotechnology and biotechnology will transform many areas of our lives, the great advances resulting from the combination of these technologies. This wave of innovation will create untold new product markets. It will also place huge demands on companies to stay ahead of the curve and to collaborate closely with competitors on complex R&D programs."

I commend Vielmetter and Sell on their skillful use if various reader-friendly devices during their examination of each megatrend, to which they devote a separate chapter. The devices include "Implications of [insert the given Megatrend]" and "The Demands of [ditto]" as well as "At a Glance" chapter introductions, "Five Questions That Business Leaders Should Ask," and dozens of mini-commentaries relevant to the given megatrend, or to some dimension or aspect thereof. These devices will facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of key material later.

Obviously, no brief commentary such as mine can do full justice to the wealth of information, insights, and counsel that Georg Vielmetter and Yvonne Sell provide. However, I hope I have indicated why I think so highly of their book. At best, speculation about what will happen during the next 15-20 years can only suggest what is probable rather than certain. And even then, we are well-advised to keep in mind the Hebrew aphorism, "Man plans and then God laughs."

    Future business trends

    Leadership 2030
By Georg Vielmetter and Yvonne Sell
This book attempts to outline and analyse six megatrends that are shaping business and society now and in the immediate future. It examines what is changing between nations and attempts to analyse these into trends.

Vielmetter and Sell focus on six megatrends in terms of time, reach, and impact: Globalization 2.0; The Environmental Crisis; Individualism and Value Pluralism; The Digital Era; Demographic Change; and Technological Convergence.

The book also discusses the unique leadership challenges that these megatrends pose. There will be debate around whether their predictions will come to pass.

The book is a dry read that took me many attempts to complete enough to review. It is not your usual leadership text, but rather a text for the analysis’s businesses employ to help shape company direction. For these selected few it will provide input for an businesses medium to long term planning. Not one for the average person.
