Great Book!!

This was a quick, hot read. This is not a full size book, but it covered a lot in a short time. Luke is married in name only to Cailin’s sister. Cailin has always loved Luke and believes that her sister only married Luke because she wanted to make sure that Cailin didn’t get him. Luke can no longer fight his attraction to Cailin, when he sees her again; things get hot and heavy between Luke and Cailin pretty fast. I really enjoyed the characters in this book, and can’t wait to read more of these characters in next books in this series.

LUKE (Forbidden Lust #1) deals with adultery, so I was hesitant at first about reviewing it but Diana Bocco does a great job of addressing the issue, albeit in 79 pages.

The story begins with billionaire businessman, Luke Blackwell, (say that three times fast :) ) reflecting on the fact that he married the wrong Walker sister under a haze of lust, and that he now feels trapped in a loveless marriage.

See he didn't sign a pre-nup, so his ambitious wife, Erika, stands to win big-time if he files for divorce before moving his assets around or if she discovers his secret attraction for her sister, Cailin.

Turns out Luke had acted on his feelings while drunk one Christmas, sharing a very intense kiss with Cailin in his garage. He apologised to Cailin while she chose to pay penance for kissing him back by not visiting again.

Now, one year later, Luke is preparing to file for divorce and Cailin has decided to accept her sister's latest invitation to visit.

When Luke unexpectedly finds Cailin taking a shower in his bathroom, a 'steamy' encounter follows but Cailin makes it clear she won't cross 'that line' because he's still married to her sister.

I really liked Cailin's sense of morality and honesty, for she decides to stop hiding from her feelings but has no intention of being 'the other woman.'

Luke too has his own scruples but might have given in to his feelings if not for Cailin's stance on the issue. Later on in the novella however, they do have sex, prompting Luke to say "to hell with everything" he might lose by filing for divorce now.

These two have serious chemistry, and I cheered on Cailin when she finally confronted her oh so unlikeable sister about going after Luke after finding out Cailin was attracted to him.

(It would be interesting to see Erika redeemed in a future book.)

Luke and Cailin eventually get their HEA but this being a novella, I would have loved to read more about them as a couple post-divorce.

I really enjoyed LUKE, hence my 4-lime rating. I'm looking forward to the future books in these series :)

5 Sexy, Steamy, Lusty Stars!

The Review:
I enjoy Diana Bocco's stories. They are always well written, to the point and have the steamiest scenes. This one is no different! This short story is about sixty-four pages long and is filled with a fun, erotic story of forbidden lust and love.

Story/Characters...
Luke said it all when he said he married the wrong sister. Erika may have captured his eye with her saucy curves and flirtatious personality, but it was beautiful, sweet Cailin who eventually captured his heart. Trouble is, he didn't realize it until it was too late and he married the social climbing, money grubbing Erika with no prenup.

Luke and Cailin had major chemistry right from the beginning of the story and reading their scenes was so much fun as their chemistry rocketed off the pages!

Cailin is a lovely character. She was smart, sassy and brave to delve into a passion filled moment with Luke even though it was against the rules of sisterhood. She stepped back when her sister took Luke away from her after confiding to Erika she had feelings for him. She wanted to preserve what small sisterly bond they had even though it was evident Erika cared little for her younger sister.

But once Cailin realized their marriage was a farce and Luke had his eye on her, she gave in to her long awaited desires and allowed their passion to explode in one frantic kiss that turned into a short, scorching hot romp that bloomed into way more than either expected but both wanted.

But conniving Erika won't be trumped by her little sister and sets out to make Cailin question her actions. I really disliked Erika and I hope in future works we find she gets her comeuppance.

The Wrap Up:
This story was exciting, passionate and smokin' hot. I wanted way more than sixty-four pages but it was definitely a quick and fun read.

Starred Review. Van Gogh's reputation in the public imagination has been made as much by his descent into madness as by his art. Detailing the final year of his life and the "Studio of the South" in which Gauguin and Van Gogh painted side by side, Gayford brings the art back into focus. Explications of the works illuminate the collaboration—similar subjects find very different treatment by two entirely different temperaments. Yet their influence on each other is everywhere—a story that Van Gogh recommends to Gauguin finds its way into a painting; Van Gogh uses the jute canvas that is Gauguin's material of choice. While some of this is well-trodden territory, Gayford's narrative is genuinely dramatic as it moves toward Van Gogh's fateful end. Gayford makes exciting new connections between the tone of Van Gogh's correspondence and known scholarship about his probable bipolar disorder. The influences of literature, the news media and so-called "hygienic excursions" (visits to the local brothels) percolate in these letters and under the surfaces of the artists' canvases. So, argues Gayford, were they invading Van Gogh's mind. Adult/High School–In an accessible and even affectionate work of art history, Gayford tells of the two artists who lived and worked in the South of France in the fall of 1888. Their story is told in short episodes, reconstructed through the formal analysis and comparison of the paintings they created during this period, and through letters and newspapers that place the work in the context of the contemporary art world, popular literature, and current events. Their time together culminated in Van Gogh's famous ear-cutting incident (which is revealed on the jacket copy), teens with an interest in the artist's colorful yet short life may take to Gayford's somewhat breathless approach leading up to the big event. The author delights in the quotidian details of his story: the joint visits to local brothels, how the weather may have affected work habits, Gauguin's cooking skills. The biggest drawback is the use of small black-and-white photos of paintings. In this intelligent and engrossing book, Gayford offers an unusually vivid retelling of the famous events of late 1888, when Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin shared a studio in a small town in southern France. Relying heavily on their voluminous correspondence (written mostly to Theo van Gogh, Vincent's brother and Gauguin's art dealer), Gayford follows their trajectory from harmony to discord and, finally, van Gogh's madness. The book reveals the complicated dynamics of the relationship: desperately lonely, van Gogh wanted Gauguin to remain in Arles as long as possible, yet his increasingly vehement arguing repelled his friend. And better than most others who have attempted it, Gayford illuminates how the two artists influenced each other's work. Van Gogh, for instance, might never have completed one of his masterpieces, his final version of The Sower, without the lessons provided by Gauguin's diagonal compositions and foregrounded figures. Gayford persuasively diagnoses van Gogh's illness (bipolar disorder) and even provides a plausible rationale for the notorious incident of the artist's lopping off of his own ear. Kevin Nance

Interesting biography of famous painters

A not-yet-famous Vincent Van Gogh rents a small yellow house in Arles in the south of France, hangs his paintings on the walls, sets up a studio, and invites a not-yet-famous Paul Gauguin to stay with him there and paint. Gauguin moves in, and a turbulent nine-week period of artmaking and everyday life begins.

In The Yellow House, Martin Gayford has combined thorough biographical research of two of the most important artists in history with moving and suspenseful storytelling. He invites readers to live, briefly and chaotically, with Van Gogh and Gauguin. Covering a short period of both artists' lives, the book focuses on details of the everyday, taking the reader into the very small space the two artists shared until it is possible to feel equally the mild claustrophobia and the exhilaration of watching a masterpiece being painted.

This period of time is a crucial one for both artists, and Gayford shows how their living and working together deeply affected both of their development. They shared ideas and meals, disagreed and mimicked one another, and each created some of his greatest masterpieces during this time: Van Gogh's Sunflowers and Gauguin's Vision of the Sermon among them. But all was not well. Less than two months after Gauguin arrived in Arles, Van Gogh suffered the famous breakdown which led him to cut off his own ear.

With masterful storytelling, Gayford builds toward this crisis, describing the tension between Van Gogh and Gauguin, while sensitively exploring Van Gogh's developing mental illness. The result is a vivid and dramatic glimpse into the minds and hearts of two of history's greatest painters.

It is well written, incredibly interesting, and gives a lot of examples of paintings of Van Gogh and Gauguin, along with the orientation of what they were doing in their day to day lives and how their perspectives differed in general, as well as in the individual pieces they painted at the same time, same space, and sometimes same subject. Their relationship was so fascinating. I never wanted this book to end! The book also discusses the relationship of Van Gogh to his brother, the people immediately around him, and other artists...and explores his thought processes about these people and his circumstances. Also included is a good bit of biography leading up to his time at the Yellow House. The format was well done for my iPhone. I've had to exclusively read this book on it, and I still greatly enjoyed every minute.

DISCOVER THE ANCIENT ART OF THE PILGRIMAGE

MAYBE A PILGRIMAGE CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE
Amit was totally lost. His father had died. His job over. His relationship gone. He felt adrift, depressed, broken.

He was so lost he wandered the world trying to find his way back.

Twenty years later Amit/Kamal wrote the novel about what happened - REBIRTH.

The novel is about how he discovered for himself the ancient art of the pilgrimage. How to be a wanderer.
Would a pilgrimage, a wandering, solve his problems?

I read Kamal's book. The book comes out today. I had him on my podcast (also out today). I wanted to find out how even in our daily lives we can go on a pilgrimage.

Even if I'm in a cubicle, can I break free, can I become a wanderer?
Sometimes I also feel stuck. But I don't want to go away for months at a time. I want a pilgrimage in my life right now!

From what I can gather from reading the book, REBIRTH, and talking with Kamal, a pilgrimage has several parts:

A) SEEKING AN ANSWER
Something happened. Something confusing. Something that wasn't in the plan.
You have to get off the regular path. Try a new one. Try one that takes a bit of courage and discipline. To meet stranger along the way

B) IT TAKES TiME
I'm not a believer that you have to go to a far location.
But take time for yourself each day to do something you've never done before. Think about things you never thought about before.
Find the places in your life that you never looked before. They are there every day. The pilgrimage awaits.
Do a dare you never would have dared to before.

C) STRUGGLE
Maybe some people find life easy. I don't.
Life is filled with worries about money, about relationships, about (for me) kids, about decisions, about the people who hate you, who annoy you, who scare you. Anxieties, regrets.
Every pilgrimage begins with the struggle. And every journey is a struggle.
The struggle doesn't stop. It just changes. It changes into one where you are lost to one where you have vision.
Where the struggle is not being trapped in the vision of others but for the unique impact that you want to create.

D) BENEFITS OF A PILGRIMAGE:
- You see more clearly: Everything you see on a pilgrimage is different from "normal life". Enjoy them. Learn from it. Even a single day, a single meeting, can be a pilgrimage. What is your takeaway from it.
- You meet people. I like to pretend everyone has a fortune cookie to give me. A little bit stale, a little bit crunchy, with a folded message inside. Read it.
- There's an end. We've made pilgrimages too easy. We can go to a museum and see 2000 works of art.
It used to be that people would travel a 1000 miles to see one painting hanging up in a chapel. Then you can really appreciate what you see.
The more you appreciate the people, the things, the emotions around you, the more you are a pilgrim.
- Come back changed. A pilgrim doesn't just fly a plane from LA to NY. A pilgrim changes because of the journey. You do that by using your senses: listen more, see more, taste more, observe more.
The convenience of modern society comes at a price. It's too difficult now to be a pilgrim because everything is two taps away on our phone.
There is an "otherness" to being disconnected for a bit. To search. To wander.
And finally, to give up looking. To surrender to the results.

It's freeing to give up, even for a few minutes, everything you ever knew. To become a Wanderer.
To look around and see everything as if it were new.

REBIRTH, by Kamal Ravikant, got me thinking about these things. He went on his pilgrimage. He met people. He went on an adventure, a journey, and reading his book showed me how.

I need to leave. To struggle. To find an answer.

And then to completely give up all hope of ever finding one. To find again the beauty of being completely lost.

If I get lost enough, maybe I can find something worth looking for.

Rebirth - Can you find your wanderer?

On the surface, Rebirth tells the tale of a man’s 550-mile trek through Spain. The main character does fine moving forward physically. Spiritually, not so much. Until he meets up with strangers who help him understand how true peace comes from walking the line of acceptance and forgiveness.

Oh, he fights his past along the way. The internal battles have worn on who he is. The beauty in Kamal’s writing style is its raw simplicity. The words, thoughts move along mellow but then punch the readers with a dose of awareness they may use in their daily travels.

The resistance of the main character is gently, intelligently chiseled away. It’s very tough for a writer to maintain this cadence and keep a reader engaged. Kamal accomplishes this.

As pages are read, you feel the character’s slow emergence to find his personal meaning and acknowledge the human catalysts that have helped him reach a spiritual destination.

Kamal has a gift for story-telling. Entwined in this fable are life lessons and his story - the consistent torment of a man to find peace which culminates in actions the main character takes to heal and quell the internal demons of his past.

One concept I love is the “thin space.” The place where separation between this plane and another is thin enough to breach. If a reader steps back, lives in the moment, they’ll be able to detect a thin place. For me, it’s a patch of sky above tips of tall pines. It’s a way to connect to the universe.
This book is a labor of love. You feel it on every page. It’s an easy read. It moves along at a steady cadence although the experiences and lessons are intense. It’s as if Kamal wants us to slowly absorb words of personal healing as pages are turned.

My personal takeaways - If a man can grind stone into colorful, sparkling works of art, an individual has the ability to re-ignite the warmth of heart, perhaps a color of life lost long ago, and use that newfound awareness to live a richer life in the present.

Can you be a wanderer and be still at the same time? It's only through stillness and awareness do you become not just a wanderer, but an effective nagivator of a life.

I hope we see more work like this from Kamal in the future.

“A true masterpiece makes me forget I’m reading at all…The book disappears and I am there…”

“What’re you doing?” my son asked.

“Writing a book review,” I said. “Want to help? What should I say about this book?”

“Needs pictures.” Lesson: Never ask a nine-year old for deep literary thoughts.

“It’s perfect the way it is,” I said. “A good book puts pictures in your mind. We can see them when we read.”

Kamal Ravikant did exactly that in Rebirth. Though I’ve never been to Spain, Kamal let gave me a glimpse of the Camino de Santiago in all its beauty. I didn’t just see the Camino, I felt I experienced it, too.

A good writer puts pictures in my mind. Better writers get control of my heart, but a true masterpiece makes me forget I’m reading at all. The book disappears, and I am there.

That’s what "Rebirth" did for me--I walked each mile of this pilgrimage along with the main character, Amit. I felt the breeze, shivered in the rain, took part in the conversations, listened to pilgrims, and drank the wine.

For me,"Rebirth" wasn’t only about reading Amit’s pilgrimage to find himself after losing his father, it made me think deeply about my life and goals, too.

As the editor of Soundview Executive Book Summaries, which distills business books into 5,000-word recaps, Murray offers 17 such summaries of marketing books published in the last 15 years. It's arguably a narrow range for the best "of all time"—even with big names like Regis McKenna and Sergio Zyman on board. Each book summary begins with a quick summation, often making redundant the introductions written especially for the collection. And though the condensed versions manage to extract the key ideas from each text, some authors fare better than others. Faith Popcorn's unique voice survives compression, for example, much better than Seth Godin's does. The selected books are sequenced to suggest a broader argument that runs from connecting with customers to marketing in the 21st century, but the actual connections between the various works are largely unstated. Unless you're completely new to marketing research, chances are you've come across at least one of these books already, but Soundview's summaries are a good introduction for those with no background. Guru Review....excellent

I had to pick a book and write a review as part of an assignment of for may graduate marketing class. Having no marketing experience I took a shot in the dark and picked this book.

I am so glad I did. Although the authors of the original full-text versions would disagree, Mr. Murray "readers digest" summaries of the book were terrific. This book allowed me a great overview of 17 marketing books in one.

For someone new to marketing it was so quick and excellent reading to get me up to speed. You'll have to wait for a experienced marketing major for their judgment.

I felt it should be required reading for anyone who wants to know more about marketing but don't have the time to read all the full-text versions.

A wonderful time saver!

I was teaching a class on marketing at a local college and I found this book valuable to review many of the principles I have used thoroughout my own life with the 15 successful businesses I have run. I was able to read this book quickly, absorb the primary points and found the advice given totally in line with my own personal experiences as a serial entrepreneur. A must read for anyone wanting an overview of marketing tips for the self-employed.
