Anyone who loves the humorous but hair-raising horror in R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series will devour British author Darren Shan's first novel with equal zeal. Some books are born with a surrounding buzz; this one even has Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling's stamp of approval: "Fast-paced and compelling, full of satisfying macabre touches," she writes. Warner Brothers will be making it into a movie, and the rest of the series is already in the works. Given all that, you'd expect a tour de force! Really, though, Cirque Du Freak is a thrill ride that will keep even the most reluctant readers turning pages, but will never take its place in the literary canon.

Darren Shan, author and narrator, sets the book up as a true story, warning readers: "Real life's nasty. It's cruel.... Evil often wins." Indeed, evil begins to win when Darren and his buddies find a flier for "Cirque Du Freak," a traveling freak show promising performances by the snake-boy, the wolf-man, and Larten Crepsley and his giant spider, Madame Octa. Darren and his friend Steve wouldn't miss it for the world.

So, Saturday night they sneak out to the old theater, tall and dark, with broken windows. "Every act you see tonight is real," croaks Mr. Tall. "Each performer is unique. And none are harmless." That's for sure. (A werewolf bites off the hand of someone in the audience, for instance.) Things grow very serious for the two boys when Steve not only recognizes Mr. Crepsley as a famous vampire, but professes his true desire to join him! To make matters worse, the spider-obsessed Darren goes back to the old theater to steal Madame Octa so he can teach her tricks in his room. (He does, with mixed results.) The plot further coagulates as Darren is faced with some terrible decisions about what to do to save his bloodthirsty friend Steve.

Readers may be too enthralled to notice some clumsy editing (the aforementioned bitten-off hand is later referred to as an arm, Darren stops dead in his tracks when he's already stopped, etc.). They may also not notice that the boys constantly use adult-sounding expressions like "his breath stank to the high heavens," though the book is clearly set in the 21st century. If this book gets under your kids' skin (and it probably will), they're in luck--we haven't heard the last of the Saga of Darren Shan. (Ages 10 and older, not for the faint of heart) --Karin Snelson

With strong sales overseas and a movie deal in the works, book one in The Saga of Darren Shan series is poised to capture a wide audience of series horror readers. After a rather slow buildup, a boy with the same name as the author sneaks out with best friend Steve to an illicit freak show, and his life becomes entangled with a vampire spider-wrangler, Mr. Crepsley. "This is a true story," writes Shan. "In real life, bad things happen. People die. Fights are lost. Evil often wins." The scenario is compelling, and the author mines the exploitative history of early 20th-century sideshows to create an artfully macabre "Cirque du Freak." But Darren's actions are often undermotivated: "I can't explain why Madam Octa [the spider] meant so much to me, or why I was placing my life in such danger to have her. Looking back, I'm no longer sure what drove me on." Also his intermittent attraction to and repulsion by the vampire is never fully explored. His behavior may be explained in the sequel, The Vampire's Assistant (due in Sept.), but the open ending leaves so many loose ends that readers may leave more frustrated than intrigued, especially since the characters' wooden dialogue drains them of personality ("I'm upset," says Steve. "It hurt, what Mr. Crepsley said, and you ignoring me at school... If you break up our friendship, I don't know what I'll do"). Readers interested in boys becoming vampires would be better served by M.T. Anderson's Thirsty and those fascinated with freaks by Iain Lawrence's Ghost Boy. Ages 10-up.

Gr 4-8-In his introduction, 12-year-old Darren claims that this is a true story, though the names have been changed and the country (obviously England) kept secret. When a bizarre-sounding freak show comes to town, he and his friend Steve sneak out to attend, and Steve recognizes one of the performers-as a centuries-old vampire. Darren decides he must steal the vampire's performing, poisonous spider. The theft is successful, and he learns to control Madam Octa with a combination of flute music and ESP-until she bites Steve. Darren must then sell himself into vampire slavery to get the cure to the spider's poison. This volume is neither as well written nor as compulsively readable as the "Harry Potter" books (Scholastic), though surely J. K. Rowling's endorsement on the cover will win it a few fans. Most of the characters aren't developed much beyond their names and a brief description. The slowness of the plot in the beginning might turn some readers off, but once the supernatural enters, they will be hooked. The fun here is in the details and in the uniqueness of the non-evil vampire monster. Several volumes of the series are already out in England, and the movie rights have already been purchased, ensuring that this title and probably its sequels will be in demand.-Timothy Capehart, Leominster Public Library, MA

Turn your kids onto reading again.

I remember reading this book as a child and loved it back then. I am now an instructional aide for some 6th graders. They really were not invested in reading until I gave them this book. There was one scholar in particular who would not read any book given to them because they were not "good" at reading until they picked this one up. They have read this book enthusiastically and actually want to complete their work quickly so they can get back to reading the book. Any book that can truly change a scholar's perception of reading is truly a marvelous book. I'm glad to get them for the scholars of my class.

Warning: This is the second book in the CIRQUE DU FREAK series, so this review necessarily contains spoilers for Book 1.

Darren Shan’s life is officially a mess after several monumental screw-ups which were detailed in the previous appropriately named book, A Living Nightmare. He has left home and joined the Cirque du Freak as Mr. Crepsley’s assistant. Mr. Crepsley is a vampire and Darren is now a half-vampire. Darren has super strength and speed and, he discovers, he’s dangerous to humans. He’s bummed out because not only has he left his family and friends (who think he’s dead), but he now worries that he’ll never be able to have any friends at all. He also despairs because he knows that, eventually, he’ll have to start drinking human blood…. or die.

Darren’s a sweet kid, despite his mistakes, so readers will be pleased to see Darren making a couple of friends in The Vampire’s Assistant. One is Evra, the snake-boy from the show, and another is Sam, a kid from a town near where the Cirque du Freak is camped. Author Darren Shan is wise to give us a little break from the terror as Darren, Evra and Sam act like normal boys for a while and as Darren meets his new freaky “family” and learns how to do his chores for the show. Readers will also be pleased to notice that Mr. Crepsley, who’s become sort of a father figure, is pretty ethical for a vampire. (Although, paradoxically, what he did to Darren in book 1 is not very ethical.)

Soon enough things start going wrong. There’s a camp of environmentalists nearby and one of them takes an interest in the goings-on at Cirque du Freak. When he gets involved, something gruesome and horrible happens — something that will haunt Darren for the rest of his life. I was grossed out and disturbed by these events and I’d recommend that parents read The Vampire’s Assistant before giving this series to a squeamish child. The massive popularity of the series suggests that many children can handle the horror, but I don’t think my 11-year old daughter can.

Author Darren Shan does a great job creating tension. Foreshadowing and short chapters with cliffhanger endings keep the reader turning pages. I didn’t believe in some of Darren’s actions, especially at the climax of the story, but younger readers probably won’t notice. (But I do hope they notice the improper use of the personal pronoun “me” instead of “I” in several of Darren’s sentences. Inexcusable.) (Update: Mr. Shan has informed me that this particular use of poor grammar was deliberate and is corrected by an English teacher who interacts with Darren in a future book).

I’m listening to the audio version of CIRQUE DU FREAK which is produced by Blackstone Audio and narrated by Ralph Lister. Again, Lister’s reading is a little too emphatic for me, but younger readers are likely to approve.

Sounds freaky for parents - Vampires!!?? But the topic is treated very humanely. The boy in question is very concerned about his predicament and reluctant to hurt anyone. The series has very positive messages about friendship and responsibility.

Shashi Deshpande, daughter of the renowned Kannada dramatist and Sanskrit scholar Shriranga, was born in Dharwad. At the age of fifteen she went to Mumbai, graduated in economics, then moved to Bangalore, where she gained a degree in law. Solid Content for Passing the A+ Exam

My experience level: 2 years in IT consulting, 5 years of off/on tech support - for the most part self-taught knowledge. Random server/network support knowledge. Never had a job that directly and consistently applied the knowledge for this test, but the subject matter was by no means foreign to me.

Materials used: all Mike Meyers' - this book and A+ Passport, 2nd Ed. Also used the 1200 test questions that came with the voucher I got from Totalsem.com. I was a Mike Meyer's bitch boy for this exam. I will likely get a second opinion if I go for Network+.

First, the test questions are very helpful, not only for content but also for preparing you to think like you will during the test (minus those rare questions that are in direct conflict with the text).

For the A+ hardware exam, this book is perfect. Nearly aced the test after almost 2 weeks of studying. Good pictures, clear writing.

For the A+ OS exam, which was WAY more specific than I thought it was going to be (passed easily but only a midrange score), this book is probably pretty good but I would study up to twice as long as you did for the hardware. I think I felt this book gave me the impression that was I well prepared for the test, when really I was only adequately prepared. There was actually one point in this book that said "the A+ exam does not cover EFS, but just know what it is blah blah blah". There was an EFS question on my test. Maybe it was one of those "feeler" questions they throw in but aren't counted - not sure. These discrepancies are few and far between but it may be just enough to make you doubt other stuff you have read. I have my doubts that you could ace the OS exam with just this book, but I think you can easily pass both exams using only this book and it's probably a great resource for later.

This is the only book that i used to pass the A+ certification tests. I am not a tech, i have no experience as being a tech and nor do i have want to be a tech. But being a college student and trying to break into the IT field can be daunting without experience and/or certifications. This A+ was the ice-breaker. After acheiving this certification and posting my resume, i literally received multiple calls a day for open positions and was offered a very good job in 2 days. Without experience this certification is basically your building block to breaking into the field as well as stepping stone for other certifications. I recommend reading this entire book once and then again taking detailed notes on things that are unfamiliar to you. I spent maybe a couple of weeks studying day and night. I do not guarentee that you will pass using just my method as i am a very proficient user and have extensive knowledge of hardware and software but i'm positive that with strict commitment to reading this book, the test will be a piece of cake.

Perfect handbook for cyclist aiming at using power meter for training

Having read and constantly referred back to all Joe Friel's books, all the variations of his Training Bible aimed at Cyclist, Triathletes, etc... I immediately purchased this book as soon as it came out.
This book picks off where the 'Training Bibles' left off as it dives deep into power meter training, which is the biggest training trend for cyclist of all levels, as power meters become widely available and accessible.
I've been training with a power meter since 2008, and read Andy Coggan's book in great detail, and also use it regularly, as I a view these types of books more as reference book to keep coming back to, rather than books you read once and put it back on the shelf.

In spite of being knowledgeable about training and power meters, I found this book to be a great reading book as well as a great reference book.
The book is very easy to read and addresses very well not only the how, but also the why of power meter training. Even though, I'm a believer and already use it, I found those section very entertaining and very educational.

The tone of the book assumes no prior knowledge from the reader and I found that very useful. The material and concepts are all very current and up-to-date.

Joe Friel's ability is to make simple all the concepts behind power meter training easy to understand and very logical, without going into deep technical details as Andy Coggan's reference book on power meter training.

I view this book as targeted at an wider audience that includes not only athletes that currently only use heart rate and want know why and how to us power meters, but also experienced athletes that want to complement their knowledge.

Don't hesitate, get this book, read it and keep coming back to it !!!! and to address other comments, to get an even deeper understanding do read Andy Coggan's book (which Friel quotes throughout this book), although it is more technical and takes longer to understand.

In summary, this is the perfect book for cycling enthusiasts that are training with heart rate and are curious about power meter based training. It has something for everyone, from athletes with no knowledge of power meter training to athletes with already years of power meter training on their background.

Great addition to my library !!! Now we need this book on Kindle !!!

A good intro to training with power, a few glaring problems

It's hard to read anything on power training without comparing it to Training and Racing with a Power Meter by Hunter Allen and Andy Coggan. That book gives a very detailed and technical description of training with a power meter. The problem for those new to using a power meter is that it's detailed and technical.

Friel's new book is geared more towards those who are considering getting a power meter or just bought one and want to know how it is different from training with a heart monitor. I'd say it does that pretty well.

There are a few problems though. There's almost nothing new in the book at all. If you've read Friel's blog and the articles on TrainingPeaks, you won't find new information here.

The biggest problem is that he defined Intensity Factor wrong. IF, as seen in all the training software out there, is (Normalized Power/Functional Threshold Power). Friel instead defines IF as (Average Power/Functional Threshold Power). Those two numbers can vary quite a bit. After seeing that mistake, it had me questioning every table and calculation based on IF for the rest of the book.

He proposes several rules that don't make sense. For example, the 5% rule that says you can double any duration and maintain 5% less power. It sounds nice, but it doesn't work for most durations for all athletes. For example, a sprinter with a 600 watt 1-minute power probably can't maintain 570 watts for 2 minutes unless we're talking about world-champion level fatigue resistance. Even a longer duration like 300 watts at 5 minutes, holding 290 watts at 10 minutes would be very unlikely. The rule only really applies to longer aerobic durations, but that it not clear from the book (when something only applies to a few situations, it's not really a rule, is it?)

The Appendix has several workouts in it, but they are just a rehash of the workouts from the Training Bible books. They are not nearly as detailed as the ones in the Hunter/Coggan book.

Lastly, the book has a weird semi-conversational tone, with the author referring to himself in the first person. Some authors can pull that off and have it feel natural. To me, if felt forced.

Excellent Guide To Training With Power

Joe Friel's The Power Meter Handbook may be the single best available resource on training with power for most cyclists and triathletes. Released in late 2012, Friel does a good job of making sense of a topic that is confusing to many. Training & Racing With a Power Meter, released in 2010, is also an excellent book on the same topic, but it is more technical and might be an easier read for more advanced users of power meters.

Riding with a power meter is similar to using a heart rate meter in that the primary display is a single number (watts of power), except power data is significantly more useful if you know what you are doing. Using a power meter is so important that Joe won't coach an athlete who doesn't use one.

Before you pick up the book know that you won't master a power meter overnight or in a week. You must familiarize yourself with the concepts, analyze workouts within power meter software, and compare workouts over time. No single concept of power meter use is difficult, but experience is necessary. If you like looking at numbers and comparing workouts, this will be fun. If this has no appeal to you then hire a good coach to do the work for you.

To get full benefit from your power meter you must test often (every 4-6 weeks) and download ALL of your workouts into your training software.

Newer athletes, and those not looking for serious performance, can get most of the book's benefit by reading to page 125 (book length is 209 pages). More advanced athletes and coaches will want to read beyond, and for those familiar with power but looking for deeper information, this is where the book shines. Joe explains advanced metrics such as chronic training load (CTL) and acute training load (ATL), and how to manage workouts to peak at the right time without guesswork.

The third part of the book provides specific guidance on base, build, and peak period workouts for three groups: triathletes, road racers/time trialists, and century riders.

Serious athletes and coaches will use this book as a reference for many years.

When Charles Darwin finished The Origin of Species, he thought that he had explained every clue, but one. Though his theory could explain many facts, Darwin knew that there was a significant event in the history of life that his theory did not explain. During this event, the ''Cambrian explosion,'' many animals suddenly appeared in the fossil record without apparent ancestors in earlier layers of rock.

In Darwin's Doubt, Stephen C. Meyer tells the story of the mystery surrounding this explosion of animal life -- a mystery that has intensified, not only because the expected ancestors of these animals have not been found, but because scientists have learned more about what it takes to construct an animal. During the last half century, biologists have come to appreciate the central importance of biological information -- stored in DNA and elsewhere in cells -- to building animal forms.

Expanding on the compelling case he presented in his last book, Signature in the Cell, Meyer argues that the origin of this information, as well as other mysterious features of the Cambrian event, are best explained by intelligent design, rather than purely undirected evolutionary processes.

About the Author
Dr. Stephen C. Meyer received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in the philosophy of science. A former geophysicist and college professor, he now directs the Center for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute in Seattle. In 2004, Meyer ignited a firestorm of media and scientific controversy when a biology journal at the Smithsonian Institution published his peer-reviewed scientific article advancing intelligent design. Meyer has been featured on national television and radio programs, including The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, CBS' Sunday Morning, NBC's Nightly News, ABC's World News, Good Morning America, Nightline, FOX News Live, and the Tavis Smiley show on PBS. Another great thorough and logical read

Again, I am impressed by Meyer's approach, very Thomistic. Meyer's covers not only the topic but addresses numerous objections from critics as well as his own critique of the information he has discovered from other scientists in this vast field. His continued clarity in presenting the topic, his continued devotion to pursing the truth and asking the hard questions, even if he doesn't like the answers and his Thomistic manner in reviewing the evidence, stating his limits in his understanding and addressing his critics with dignity is remarkable. I deeply appreciate how he pursues the answer to his question: where did the information come from that all life, in fact the entire universe, is built upon? In my opinion, only fearful children are afraid of the ultimate answer to this question. As far as ID is concerned, Meyer's, again, explains that ID cannot provide the ultimate answer. The only answer ID can give is, complex specified information only comes from intelligent agents. Even dolphins fit into that category!! though they don't go to college, get advanced degrees and then deny the truth that's right in front of them. Meyer's very methodically manner in addressing this topic is so refreshing and so uplifting because he simply presents questions and as he presents his answers, he undergirds each answer with numerous references to work others have accomplished. He does not cover or hide what he doesn't know and he gives detailed explanations for everything he proposes, unlike many of his critics who simply object and push into obscurity their position without providing modern day now proof for their position concerning the creation of information found in the cell and in animal body plans.
