This comprehensive volume relies on never-before tapped primary source documents from the archives of General Motors, the National Defense Research Committee, marine architects Sparkman & Stephens, the US Army, and others to tell - for the first the first time accurately - the story of the DUKW and the men whose lives it touched. This 75,000-word book is packed with archival photos detailing the detailing the origin, design, numerous changes throughout production as well as wartime use of the DUKW. Covered are campaigns in Sicily, Mainland Europe, India and the far-flung islands of the Pacific, as well as its subsequent use in Korea, along with authorized field modifications as well as the follow-on Flying DUKW, Superduck, and Drake, and DUKW use in the 21st century. Military Vehicles Magazine Rates this FIVE STARS!
By John Adams-Graf
The Complete DUKW: Historical Reference is, by far, the most comprehensive study of GMC's amphibious 2-1/2-ton truck ever to be published. Not only is the photo-album like presentation packed with more than 750 photographs and detailed drawings, author David Doyle has delved deep into primary research to uncover new information--and dispel many commonly held misconceptions--about the vehicle.

Though Doyle relied on never-before publicly distributed primary source documents from the archives of General Motors, the Roderick and Olin Stephens collection at Mystic Seaport and the National Defense Research Committee, he even had the opportunity to spend long hours discussing the vehicles with Julius Grigore, the project manager for the Flying DUKW and Super DUKW. The reams of documents from the National Archives and even an unpublished autobiography by Roderick Stephens provide a solid backbone of credibility to this work.

The 304 pages are divided into 27 chapters. The first 20 chapters closely detail the innovation, design, trials, production, deployment and combat service of the DUKW. The remaining chapters examine post-WWII service in Korea and subsequent designs and innovations including the Flying DUKW, Superduck and the Drake.

Modelers and restorers will welcome the many clear, archival images that exhibit a myriad of minute details. Historic military vehicle buffs will appreciate the strong narrative. Not only is the information deeply mined and supported, Doyle has compiled it in a logical, easy to read format. All of the photos included in the volume tell a bit of the story--each supported by a very informative caption calculated to teach the reader, image-by-image, the developmental and deployment history of the 21,000+ amphibian trucks.

With The Complete DUKW, David Doyle has successfully produced a volume that is worthy of being shelved alongside the many quintessential, vehicle-specific books written by the late Richard P. Hunnicutt. Building on Hunnicutt's tradition of intensive archival exploration, The Complete DUKW has met that standard of vehicle research--taking it even farther with verifying, and often dispelling, commonly held beliefs. Doyle has bumped the standard for historic vehicle research up a notch in The Complete DUKW.

THE book on the GMC DUKW !!
By Jim G
Just got my copy of The Complete DUKW and I am amazed at the amount of detailed info and photos of the vehicle!

The GMC factory photos of the assembly line of the "Duck" are fantastic and show it going from pieces of sheet metal to the final assembly and water testing. The photos are amazingly clear and you can see all the small details in them.

The author has provided the real story of how the vehicle was developed including detailed info on the people who designed and tested it. This info has never been in any DUKW book that I have read before...going even into how the DUKW was an offshoot of the Ford GPA amphibious jeep. It is also the first time I have seen documentation of the production of the DUKW at the GMC St. Louis Plant!

In addition to this the author has included photos and data on what seems to be every variation, accessory and add-on kits that were developed and used on these vehicles. The later chapters document the use of "Ducks" in the different theaters of war and post war as well.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who owns a DUKW, models them or loves military vehicles.
