A mythological love story

The "Secrets of Artemis" is the story of the coming of age of the Greek goddess Artemis, told through the imaginative lens of fantasy writer C.K. Brooke.
I wish I would have had something like this to read when I was in the 9th grade and trying to learn about Greek Mythology. I was never able to care much back then about the Greek gods and goddesses because their stories never touched my heart.
That all changed with this book, when the 16-year-old Artemis, goddess of the hunt, came to life for me, and the legendary details of her life were expanded upon through Brooke's capable storytelling.
The story of Artemis told throughout history is that she remained a virgin through the decree of her father Zeus, the King of the Gods, despite her great friendship with the giant, handsome and kind hunter Orion. But this story proposes that she and Orion were secret lovers despite her father's wishes.
Many of the characters of Greek mythology came to life for me in "Secrets of Artemis." I think this would be a great book to share with young people if you want to captivate them with the stories of the gods and goddesses worshiped at at time when civilization was young.
Like all successful young adult novels, it's an entertaining and satisfying read for adults as well.

"Much that is believed about me is only partially true, or twisted in some way"

I have always enjoyed reading Greek mythology and reading about the Gods and Goddesses who inhabit those myths and this is a story about Artemis, Goddess of the hunt. The story of Artemis is familiar to most readers who have sampled the Greek myths. She is usually portrayed as the goddess who is chastised. Unable to be joined with a man, to be pure for all ages. But this story has a different direction for us to explore. ;)

The story is written all the way from when she was born with her twin brother Apollo and we begin to learn how she acquires her power, her independence but what makes this book different than just a regular mythology book is that it's told through Artemis's voice herself and I love that!

I think this is a really well crafted tale for the book-ish reader who likes Greek mythology and it's tales. A fun and charming story with a very strong female protagonist that you instantly fall inlove with. The writing is absolutely beautiful and you cannot put it down. C.K. Brooke is definitely a top author of mine that I think deserves way more credit.

Face it, you're buying it because you have to

Very obtuse writing with little sense of flow of information. Skips back and forth between an almost overly simplistic explanation of certain concepts and explanations requiring a deep technical background to grasp. After a full half-semester going all the way through this book, it took me three weeks' worth of reading in another, superior textbook to gain a complete, comprehensible, and relatable understanding of the exact same concepts.

I'd like to add a full ONE-STAR review for the Kindle version, which eliminates distinctions between section headers and makes it much more difficult to track the information. I was stupendously disappointed with this adaptation.

All this said, if you are buying this textbook, chances are it's because your instructor or department mandates it (indeed, my professor told us it was the department-mandated textbook but he would actually be teaching out of another book). Just know you are being asked to throw away money, as is so often the case in higher education.

The Most Practical Security Design Book I've Read

I am primarily a systems engineer with an emphasis on system and network security. This book provides an excellent framework and methodology for developing a security architecture from the ground up. It's avoids a purely academic approach by including methods that can be applied in the real world. The book reads well and is indexed in a manner that allows it to be used as a desk reference. This is currently the best security book on my shelf. Buy this book!!!

Best Security Architecture I Have Seen

Although there are a number of books claiming to talk about security architecture, this one really does! This book is really helpful in describing the high level concepts that security engineers should know when developing a security architecture. It is a little weak on cost-benefit analyses, but provides a good foundation for security architects. Clearly, the author has given some thought to the content and does more than tell anecdotes and describe various security technologies. I highly recommend this book to anyone designing a security architecture.

Wonderful book for adults as well as young girls!

Wow . . . I can't believe the haters who have weighed in on this book! And nothing in their "reviews" indicate they've even read it!

"Venus and Serena . . ." is a well-written but easy read, doling out lifestyle advice and guidance for young girls and giving insight to the motivations behind decisions made by Venus and Serena. It details why their parents decided to pull them out of certain tours (I was surprised and delighted by the explanations), and how those decisions led to other life decisions.

I bought the book for my 17-year-old daughter, but sat down and read the whole thing. Feeling guilty, I ran out and bought another copy for my daughter. This is a book that I didn't mind buying twice.

I LOVED their advice on dating, and how girls need to love themselves first. The book is BIG on the importance of self-esteem.

I found "Venus and Serena . . ." to be motivational and insightful, and I highly recommend it.

I'm not a tennis fan, but you don't have to be to enjoy this book.

While the target audience is teenage girls, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, and I'm a middle-aged woman!

It's easy to read, full of insight into the lives and motivations of Serena and Venus, and has great advice for teenage girls on dating and other issues important to adolescents. I especially liked their emphasis on the need for self-esteem.

I agree with the reviewer who questioned the so-called reviewers who lambasted the book, since nothing in their "reviews" indicated they've read it!

I think Serena and Venus (and their co-author, Hilary Beard) did a wonderful job, and I encourage anyone with a teenage girl to run out and buy this book.

Horrible story

For a career that sounds like it could be quite luxurious and interesting, this book didn't really explore any of that. It's really just is a book about a woman who likes to sleep around and goes into detail about the persona's relationships, social life and sex life. It's just an awful piece of literature.

Nice read + subject overdone

Although 'Cabin fever' makes a nice read, it focuses too much on sex & extravaganza -- that comes with airline crews on non-active in a foreign country between two flights.

What this book does not tell you, is that (1) such aircrews often are forbidden to leave the premises of their hotel. In some countries the risk of being injured, kidnapped or murdered when outside is estimated too high. Or that (2) many crew members use their abundant spare time to study. A study to make them better in their job, or a study just for fun -- such as law or history.

Even when we restrict ourselves to hedonistic pleasures: they happen, oh yes, but not in the massive way Mandy Smith wants us to believe.

10cc’s classic 1970s song, “I’m Mandy, Fly Me”, inspired by a National Airlines ad:
Fast forward forty odd years and we have a real life air hostess from Virgin named Mandy (Smith, to be precise), imploring us to fly with her, metaphorically speaking, via the pages of her racy memoir, Cabin Fever.

As a girl, I harboured a fantasy of being Mandy in a chic, crisp polyester uniform living the jet set life, but was actually too scared of the flying bit. The Air Hostess is no longer considered the female icon she was in my youth, but the job, as the book confirms, still retains its allure, attracting bright, bubbly young woman such as Mandy who want more out of life than the 9-5 workaday existence.

Written by journalist Nicola Stow, Cabin Fever is the definitive air ‘hostie’ book for holiday reading, being entertaining, well written and thoroughly researched. Mandy herself is funny, super-knowledgeable about the business and daringly explicit.

The job itself is a weird kind of juxtaposition of servility and power: we read about Mandy being vigorously trained in health and safety yet she’s relegated to a ‘flying dinner lady’ and expected to tolerate rude and condescending passengers without complaint. Passengers also have funny turns on planes; get completely pissed; moan about the food, or worse, can have heart attacks and babies. Mandy does a sterling job, smiling through it all, while looking immaculate and professional. It’s only when she’s off duty and she can finally let off steam does she behave very badly indeed. But, that’s the fun part, together with the exotic locations, the shopping and the ‘dishy’ pilots. In the sexual stakes Mandy was definitely the ‘hostess with the mostest’. But with all the rocking and rolling around the world, the ultimate casualties in this rarified atmosphere were her serious relationships.

Mandy makes no apologies for having had a cracking good time, so kudos to her. Living, literally, with your head in the clouds makes life a little off-kilter. It’s a part of the journey. As Cabin Fever attests, the job can take you on a very bumpy ride. Maybe that’s why today, her feet are planted on terra firma, with a husband and a family.

I finished the final chapters during a transatlantic flight. A cabin attendant retrieving my food tray saw the cover and mouthed the title: ”Cabin Fever. The Sizzling Secrets of A Virgin Air Hostess”
“Is it sizzling? She asked a few minutes later returning with my Duty Free…
I said nothing but handed her the book. “You can read it if you want…”
She thanked me and said she would.
Out of curiosity I asked her name.
“Audrey.” she said.

The project was descriptive in nature, relying on personal interviews, electronic mail, telephone conversations and personal observations of the ComedySportz show and workshops. The resulting investigation has revealed a rich and varied history of a company dedicated to competitive performance improvisation. The analysis of the beginner level workshop training methods of the Milwaukee, New York and San Jose ComedySportz clubs indicates a highlevel of teaching expertise, a wide variety of training methods and the formation of a solid background in improvisation skills. The study provides historical documentation for a leading company and offers a model for researchers interested in pursuing similar ventures.

About the Author
Dr. Kevin Bradshaw completed his B.A. in Radio Television Broadcasting and M.A. in Theatre Arts at San Jose State University, San Jose. He completed his PhD at the University of Oregon, Eugene in 1997. He has been associated with ComedySportz since 1989 and is a founding member of the Spokane, Washington ComedySportz team. He is currently serving as Vice-Chair for playwriting (Region VII) for the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Theatre in the Communication Arts Department at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

Rod Ellis is Professor of Applied Language Studies in the University of Auckland and a visiting Professor at Shanghai International Studies University. His publications includes articles and books on second language acquisition, language teaching and teacher education. His most recent is The Study of Second Language Acquisition 2nd Edition (Oxford University Press, 2008). He is also editor of the journal Language Teaching Research.

An essential reference

I would recommend this book as a reference for anyone studying or researching SLA. It has an incredibly comprehensive list of references and despite its magnitude is surprisingly easy to read. Professor Rod Ellis is widely regarded as one of the world's leading authorities on the subject and with nearly four pages of the (110-page!) bibliography filled with his own publications alone it is easy to see why. The book is logically organised and easy to navigate. It is not the type of book most people would read for fun, but as a reference for anyone planning a literature review, I couldn't rate it highly enough; truly an indispensable resource!

Ate the beginning I saw the reading of this book very dense and kind of high level. But later on, I satarted reading all the research examples that that Dr. Ellis provides and It is incredible to see all the research work he has done throughout the years to compile all of them in this huge and excellent book. It helped me understand a lot of things of Second language acqusition.

Exhaustive but uncritical of its perspective

This is a brick of a book. Thick, huge and exhaustive in its study of second language acquisition, I find it gets defensive towards non-SLA perspectives and uncritical of its own shortcomings. Socio-cultural theories challenge the cognitivist foundations of SLA. Ecological metaphors suggest input-output models of learning are out-dated. Second language socialisation may be far more important to learning than the psychological points so painstakingly analysed in this book. Rod chronicles SLA, but who is looking at the bigger picture?
